Re: New release from Springfield Armory

Red's has pistols you can rent and offers instruction too.

google Red's Austin

Delta Swift, where in NC are you? I have family in Laurinburg (the LBG we call it), Raleigh, Charlotte, etc. I'm guessing that you're near Fayetteville?

Edit: Oh! I see they're in (or near) Elizabeth City. I love that part of the state. Went to Camp Morehead when I was a kid and dated a girl from Cape Lookout.

Yep, that's where the home front is when I'm not away at college. I live in a tiny town called Hertford between Edenton and Elizabeth City. Those are the only two landmarks anyone seems to have heard of

This really irks me because I have had plans to trade my Beretta 96FS in on a PX4 Storm (I really want a 9mm for carry, and although I have plans to buy a conversion barrel for my XD40, I plan to use that only for competition shooting). Now, I don't know what to do.

This firearm would make an awesome carry weapon. Only slighty lower round capacity (13 vs 17), with the same XD frame I know and love.

The 96FS I own is the only pistol besides my .357 Magnum I don't shoot regularly. The XD beats it in every area and is the same caliber. Logic only assumes I get rid of the 96 and replace it with something I will use. The PX4 I got instead has a much higher magazine load-out, better ergonomics, cheaper ammunition, and greater accuracy.

I don't really know if this is OT, but I know a girl who's dad actually sleeps with a crossbow in his bed. A loaded crossbow. He almost shot a friend in their backyard, but didn't because he recognised the big pants.

There aren't many merits to using a crossbow for home defense. It might have a "Wow, a guy is pointing a crossbow at me" kind of shock value, but if you do have to fire it, you'd better hit the guy or have one Hell of a fast reload.

Oh well, it's better than the home defense that most British people are left with. At least it replaces the can of vasaline.

Re: New release from Springfield Armory

I finally got my internet connection back last night at home, so I was able to visit Springfield's website. Wow! I really like the look of this .45ACP XD. I've handled the 9mm/.40S&W Service model version at the LGS, and it fit my hand like a glove. I just never really considered this pistol seriously because it wasn't available in .45ACP (although the .45GAP version DID make me consider it briefly). Now that it's available in .45ACP, I'll be following this pistol with great interest. It'd be nice if Springfield would make the Tactical model in .45ACP, but they're probably waiting to see if the Service model takes off first.

A crossbow for home defense? Seems cumbersome to me, but to each his own. I'd rather (and do) have a revolver and a Surefire near the bed, but a shotgun with a mounted light would work as well. Having a light is extremely important -- ya gotta identify your target.

If you are interested in something with a bit lower capacity, but a full size frame: Kimber has a newer Polymer framed 1911 that holds 10 rounds in the mag (13 rounds pre-ban). It also cheap (for a Kimber). I think I saw one for around $600-700US.

As for Service VS Tactical: I've shot both and really didn't see a difference accuracy wise for the difference. The large model did handle recoil a bit better, although this could be due to the fact that I was concentrating more on it.

I just found out last week that I can get one for myself through my agency for $625 for the SK and $575 for the standard (compact) version. This is with tritium sights and three hi-cap magazines. I think I'm getting the little one with my tax refund...
