PC game sales slide in 2005
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/busine...mes_Sales.html
I understand that software delivery like Steam and MMO subscriptions have taken their toll on traditional retail sales of games, but this still seems a bit unbelievable to me. Quote:

BF2 won't let you watch a pixelated AT specialist take a shower.
How's it supposed to compete?

Just wait til the next expansion, Brokeback Battlefield. I hear there's lots of showering, and when you try to exit, it says "I can't quit you". According to the articles I've read, it's already won every award.

Re: PC game sales slide in 2005
I don't find it that hard to believe. PC games are once again entering that weird phase of suckdom. Very few "anticipated" titles have been coming out. For myself, the only games that I absolutely wanted to get were BF2 and Civ IV. Actually, come to think of it, throw WoW into that mix, and I think I only bought those 3 games in 2005. Used to be that I would be buying a game every 2 months or so.
As far as the Sims outselling the other games, that's believable. Combat and ruling the world apply to a comparatively small group of people, whereas the Sims sort of appeal to everyone.

There are less and less PC games in the stores in my area, so it's hardly surprising: less games, less floorspace, less sales. There is also the issue of order: why are the PC Games sections of stores always in the back, disorganized, and totally pawed over like the adult movie section of a video store? And then you have the lack of good games: Battlefield 2 is a buggy mess, and big titles Doom 3 and Quake 4 were disappointing. Really, the developers, publishers, and sellers only have themselves to blame: release crap, don't expect sales. |
