Re: Have the terrorists won?

I never said he had overwhelming support for the Iraq war. I said the war on terror. In sept. 2001 he had overwhelming support on the war on terror.
On November 10th 2001 Bush said "For EVERY regime that sponsors terror, there is a price to be paid, and it will be paid. The allies of terror are equally guilty of murder and equally accountable to justice. The Taliban are now learning this lesson. That regime and the terrorists who support it are now virtually indistinguishable"He still had overwhelming support.
Iraq was the most logical target in the continuation of the war on terror. STATEMENT OF DAVID A. KAY
http://www.house.gov/hasc/openingsta...-09-10kay.html Sadam also sponsored training camps and rewarded family's of terrorist suicide bombers. John Kerry George Bush and many others agreed. That's why congress agreed to fund the war on Iraq.

Quote:
The fact that it's a 'partisan' war is really irrelevant.
I disagree.... It started out a nonpartisan war until we got closed to the presidential election. Kerry Gore and many others flipped to antiwar status and with allot of rhetoric, accusations without substance and liberal media propaganda it turned very partisan. The relevancy in this post is that you bring up Bush's negitive approval numbers.
Many Democrats,Liberals,Independents and some Republicans I believe have fallen for the propaganda.

Quote:
The only thing he's ever had overwhelming support on was the invasion of Afghanistan - which his administration did a horrible job of managing.
Please Explain

Re: Have the terrorists won?

Not sure if anyone reads foreign afffairs but this article seems to be on topic. I also did not want to start another "terrorism" thread.

http://www.foreignaffairs.org/200609...st-threat.html

"Summary: Despite all the ominous warnings of wily terrorists and imminent attacks, there has been neither a successful strike nor a close call in the United States since 9/11. The reasonable -- but rarely heard -- explanation is that there are no terrorists within the United States, and few have the means or the inclination to strike from abroad."

Me likey the Foreign Affairs. Great article, already read it. Pretty tight reasoning, well stated argument.

Re: Have the terrorists won?

Update: no one has won anything, all sides have lost much, and the battle continues.

I'd recommend reading this article from last week's New Yorker:
http://www.newyorker.com/fact/conten...060911fa_fact3

Quote:
"Al Qaeda’s version of utopia has drawn the allegiance of a new generation of Arabs, who have been tutored on the Internet by ideologues such as Suri and Naji. This “third generation of mujahideen,” as Suri calls them, have been radicalized by September 11th, the occupation of Iraq, and the Palestinian intifada. (Suri wrote this before the current struggle in Lebanon.) Those jihadis fighting in the conflict in Iraq have been trained in vicious urban warfare against the most formidable army in history. They will return to their home countries and add their expertise to the new cells springing up in the Middle East, Central Asia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and many European nations. "

Angry Re: Have the terrorists won?

Saying that iraq was the next logical step in the war on terror is similar to saying that russia was the next logical step after WW2... Most people agree now that Saddam did not support Al Qaeda, and even if you do, it was still foolish to go to Iraq for the very reason that we had not finished in Afghanistan.

Last time I checked, 19 Nato troops died this month in Afghanistan, we still don't have Osama, and every day the taliban seems to be gaining power. Now we're on the brink of civil war in Iraq, control of afghanistan seems mixed, and for some reason we're talking about Iran now? Our army wasn't made for this. The war on terror has now lasted longer that world war 2, and while there have not been any attacks on US soil, there have been attacks on our allies in Spain and the UK. The fight seems to have been forgotten...we should step up the troop numbers in both locations, and soon. Problem is, we're running out of troops to send, and it seems the administration is intent on pulling the wool over their eyes and convincing themselves that we've made progress.

This administrtion will go down as one of the worst in US history. It has failed to act decisivly on the most important war of the young 21st centuryand it has failed to implement any domestic reforms (unless you count No Child Left Behind, but I wouldn't, because most educators don't like it, and it has had no measurable positive effects).

I am a republican who has lost my party. The party has been deystroyed by the neo-cons who decided to spend this nation further into debt then the democrats ever did. At least when the democrats did it, they found a way to pay for it. Ok, i'm getting off topic, but I wanted it to be clear that the war is not a partisan issue, never was, never should be, and a lot of republicans are starting to wake up to the level of incompetence shown by Bush, and they are begining to lose their blind loyalty.

This is long and if you read my angry little rant, then I thank you. I still think that we should have had a draft in the months following 9-11, and that it may be too late for us to realistically succeed in Iraq or Afghanistan. Time will tell. If you can tell me with a straight face that this administration has acted intelligently then you should probably get your head examined.

Re: Have the terrorists won?

Just listened to an interview with the author Richard Dreyfuss the author of an article I read in Rolling Stone online "The Phony War" -

and from a live radio interview with some lively debate from callers - good stuff -
