Why? Sigh, Americans have gotten into their own comfortable world, where it just not possible that three suburbans full of bad guys would roll up to a top security lab and fight their way inside in an attempt to steal/destroy the contents of the facility or to barricade themselves inside and set off the powder keg.

This kind of stuff happens! If we would just put the military on the borders and in airport/ports this would be a far smaller problem, but we haven't wised up yet.
Better that they be armed and ready to defend than have them overcome by a hard-core group of terrorists/traitors/criminals. What possible harm could come from them having those guns that would not be totally insignificant compared to the threat neutralized?

Why do you think Area-51 has miles and miles of perimeter security? You think that's empty desert? No, thats motion sensors and recon teams watching you from miles away, to intercept you if you get too close for comfort.

It's there for a reason. No harm could come from it that wouldn't be totally insignificant compared to the threat neutralized. I'd blow the burglars brains out rather than take the chance he might knife me.

EDIT: Not that it matters if anyone thinks this is a bad move. The government is perfectly entitled to put those mini-guns there if they think it appropriate, thank god.

The minigun is sexy, I agree, but I'd still rather have Jennifer Garner.

WOW! Look what I stirred up, Honey!

Well, you just never know what will get stirred up from time to time.

If Livermoore was on a target hitlist for any organization at all, I bet it just went much further down the list - thats all.

I know a few people who work at and have worked at LL. These guns should be near the bottom of the worry-list for the nearby residential neighborhoods. Researchers work with some seriously dangerous materials there.

I'm right across the bay (San Pablo) and happy I'm not in SF. Although I do envy you the convenient access to a lot of good restaurants. This area sucks for that.

I was right! In Die Hard with a Vengeance, as the bomb tech is explaining how the silly red water/clear water bomb works, they ask where this stuff comes from, and one of the cops says it was stolen from Livermore Labs the month before. Score!

When I imagine the conflict that would result from a frontal assault on this facility, I can't help but picture the opening scene from Team America - World Police

Re: 'Proper Armamanet'

I just noticed this thread. I work in the Nuclear Security field. As a member of the Nuclear Security Force some of the "toys" we have now are awesome, but that mini gun would be sweet. Man I would love to have that on our team at the plant I am at. Mounting that on a hummer would be sweet. Three of those babies is all we would need, no make that four.

Let me add that without getting into to much detail, a system like that is well worth it. We are governed by the NRC with specific guidelines as to how we must defend any type of nuclear plant. The training that we go through is very extensive as to weapons use, tactics and such.

We have a commitment that we must uphold in order to protect our plants from any type of aggression. Our number one priority is plant safety and the protection of the public. If it takes such weapons as the mini gun to uphold these requirements then I for one welcome them.

You'd be better served (and more comfortable) in a few of THESE.

I believe it.

I saw video of a prototype that was aimed by the passenger via laptop and a camera. It would be like playing BF2, except if you die because of lag, it would be a bit more consequential!
