Battle for New Orleans...

Now I know that what people went through there in New Orleans, especially the ones who died, ain't funny...

but this video is, and true IMO

The Government isn't there to wait hand and foot on every single citizen... sometimes it just takes some common sense, to know that poop is about to hit the fan, you might want to get the hell out.

Our governments response wasn't great, our (US) government ain't perfect... but it's the best in the world I think.

What scares me is that they want to rebuild in the same spots...with the very likely possibility that mother nature is going to come knocking again....

Maybe even this hurricane season....

Of course here in Tampa we have seen these hurricanes hit all around us and most of us know when they say to get out...we RUN!

To be fair, New Orleans is one of our more important ports and it's a city with much more culture, tradition and history than most others...

is it worth all the money they spent to rebuild it everytime it gets destroyed? its not worth MY money, or at least I'd have to see dramatic evidence as to how New Orleans benefits the nataion so as to be worth so much bloody money.

IMO they should not rebuild New Orleans.

Theres a reason why its called a "Flood Basin". If they rebuild it then I have no pity for those who move back in and get flooded again.

Fine...build and rebuild the ports. Make it a purely industrial city. Also, make usre everyone who lives in New Orleans who is not directly affiliated with the ports is SOL when it comes to federal aid resulting from Katrina part duex.

That sounds good on the surface, but cities don't work like that. If you've ever seen a "military town", you'll know what I mean. Sure, originally almost everything that exists is directly related to supporting the military base, but eventually the soldiers want to see a movie or a concert. An enterprising businessman is bound to open up a cinema or a concert venue. Now this town has a theater and a concert venue, so it attracts more people from outlying areas. This goes on and on...

Cities don't work like that (my model), I understand. However, if someone moves into the exact same area that was just DESTROYED by floods they shouldn't expect to be handed a silver spoon from the government when it happens again. Even animals know not to crap in their own homes. Wait, that was in reference to the LA Riots, not Katrina.

Oh, I'm against silver spoons from the .gov, regardless of what happens or when...

I feel for the families of the victims of the WTC attack, but I don't think Uncle Sam should've given 'em each a million bucks. I feel for the victims of Katrina, but I don't think Uncle Sam should've given 'em debit cards to use at strip clubs and casinos. I'll feel for the victims of the next big hurricane, but they need to make sure they insure their property properly and prepare for emergencies if they're going to live there.

Infrastructure, on the other hand, is a different story, and THAT is where the government actually needs to step in and help...

I agree with everything you have said except for this. And this I partially agree with. I agree with it as long as there isn't a history of devastation like Katrina. If people keep building in areas that are getting destroyed the government should say, "Go ahead and live there but don't expect us to help you because you were stupid enough to do it. You've been warned. "

I looked for the video of the La Canada Flintridge landslide in Los Angeles but couldn't find it. These people built their homes below a landslide area and yet they want the government to compensate them. Why should they get money from the government when they were stupid enough to build them home in a known flood plain. I believe the appropriate term is alluvial fan. Same goes for Katrina and New Orleans. Now if the government stepped up and build "hurrican proof" levies then I would agree with you. Let the people move in and let the government help them financially.

You also have to keep in mind that it's in the country's best interests to have an economically healthy city there. Incentives for people to rebuild the city (like tax breaks) would probably cost less than just letting the ravaged city languish in discouragement.
