Indeed it has. Iraq is more of a threat to us now than it was in the past. I don't think you're making the wrong decision to join the army or anything....if you are willing to sacrifice your life your the security of your country, I salute you. We need people to clean up the mess we got ourselves into. EDIT: Quote:

This coalition toppled Saddam Hussein's government, which was known to collaborate and harbor terrorists (Abu Nidal, e.g.), was known to threaten its neighbors and by extension the world (Iran and Kuwait), and did in fact have nuclear and biological weapons programs, ask a Kurd or a relative of one of the many Iranians killed with gas in that war. During our invasion, they fired Scuds they weren't supposed to have! Still, in 15 months, we have captured another country and stayed there losing fewer than 1000 soldiers. That is an unprecedented and astonishing feat of arms. Who would have dreamed things could have gone so well in terms of lives lost? Yesterday, the new Iraqi government was put in place, despite all sorts of predictions that it couldn't happen. A month ago, Falluja was supposed to spark an uprising, but today, 27 of the 28 main players there have been captured or killed, and we didn't have to level the town. Al-Sadr's insurgency has been rejected utterly by the mainstream in Iraq and is being destroyed around him. I fail to see how Iraq poses a greater threat today than 1.5 years ago, unless you assume that 1000's of moderate muslims were sitting around minding their own business and now wish to become suicide bombers, and I'm not buying that story. |

Well, I've tried to bring this point to light more times than I have fingers and toes. Remember back in 1998, when the Iraqi's refused to let the UN inspectors continue thier work!? and they subsequently left Iraq for a number of years now?
The UN had documentation on thousands of gallons of chemical agents etc. Now my question is..where did it go? Saddam didn't get rid of the WMD, he is 1.) either hiding them or 2.) he sent them quietly in subtle convoys north into Syria, an ally to Iraq. of course in past tense. But as for the Draft, It's all too clear to me that a draft or legislation for one says our government plans to be in Iraq for the long haul, past the 2005 timeline said by the administration. this looks all too much like the Vietnam draft in some respects. We originally were just "advisors" teaching the south vietnamese forces to fight and more. But we had the draft later as we got ourselves involved, which I believe was our intention at the beginning. just back then, we used the "to fight communism" banter. We are still a conscript Military for now, but what will we become with a draft? our government has an agreement according to news reports that eleviate draft dodgers from going to canada as they did in Vietnam. also, politicians sent thier kids to school to avoid going to the war. college won't be an excuse either this time. but with a draft, this is definately an indication in my mind that we are planning to be in Iraq for years to come. Remember; we were in Nam for more than a decade.

Re: The Draft's Coming
Maybe it is something else why this draft is comming. Tuesday April 13, 2004, most all U.S. forces pull out of N. Korea's DMZ. Look here to see how I see things and how we may have a possible invasion/conflict with North Korea. http://216.26.163.62/2004/ss_skorea_04_13.html

Nevermind. I think I misread your post. I was just saying that they were never a direct threat to our country up until this point.

Re: The Draft's Coming
Ah. I see terrorism as a tool of states who want to hurt the USA, its allies, and their economic power. If you believe that terrorists are mostly angry young muslims who need therapy, then yes, things may be worse off than before. If you believe as I do that rogue nations want to supply these groups with weapons, funds, and training, so that when they attack us these nations can say "hey wasn't me!" while enjoying every minute of our agony, then it makes sense that we have to take down those suppliers.
