Its been said that we have already gotten to the cheap oil, and when that runs out, it will be very costly.

We have plenty of Natural fuel left, Oil may be on its way out but there is a unknown amount of Methane(sp?) crystals on the ocean floor which are easily collected. Only problem is getting people and companies to convert.

Well, when the site gets its facts straight....

Quote:
In 1956, Dr. Hubbert predicted US oil production would peak in 1970, after which the US would experience a severe oil and gas crisis.

When Dr. Hubbert made his prediction, his colleagues laughed at him and called him a "doomsayer."

Fifteen years later, Dr. Hubbert's prediction came true. His colleagues, now standing in 3-hour-long lines to get gas, weren't laughing any more.
Why did the US experience a oil/gas crisis? Because OPEC used an oil embargo against the US. I don't believe Mr. Hubbert could predict that.....in fact, the website they point to doesn't make that prediction...this website seems to be adding predictions that the original scientists did not make.

Also, this is a website promoting a book......

Re: gas prices ?

The US geological survey and many other experts in oil and gas expolration agree that we only have from 20-30 years of "cheap" oil available to us. This is based on the statistics of how much "new" oil they are finding and what quantities and at what exploration cost. Why do you think that George W. is so interested in opening up your Arctic National Wildlife refuge and other National Parks to oil and gas exploration? Because you ran out of cheap and easy to get oil in the US decades ago. Some people believe that many Opec countries are vastly overstating the reserves in order to sell more oil right now, due to oil production controls based on available reserves. They believe it may only be 10-20 years of "cheap" oil left.

Whomever said that methane crypstals would be another cheap alternative? Drilling them up from the ocean floor 3000 meters down? Sounds expensivly similar to drilling for oil and how does that solve the environmental problems? More methane, great.

We have an infinite supply of hydrogen, its the most abundant element in the entire galaxy. If you use clean renewable methods like solar, wind and geothermal to seperate it from water, and use the hydrogen as a storage and transportation media, you have a cheap and perfectly clean alternative to oil. There already exists well proven and commercially available fuel cells for the (combustion free) transformation of hydrogen directly to electricity.

It's coming, and if we don't innovate, adapt and lead the way, then other countries that are being much more progressive in this area will, and they'll prosper while the old oil-based civilizations crumble.

What horses and bicycles?

Ghost: Don't forget that most of today's products are also made from oil - we don't just use it for fuel.

I concure. I like to go 80 mph down the highway, not on a horse or something else going slow. Hydrogen is weak, oil will live on as long as we keep stealing it. Cars are to good to give up.
