And in most places, they're not even planting the same species of trees, as the originals don't grow fast enough.

We, as humans, are leaving a HUGE footprint on this planet. Granted, we have been getting better at it over the past 20 or so years, but relaxing now is not the answer.

Keeping corporations as accountable as everyday citizens is the right thing to do.

Does everyone not have to deal with emissions/registration on their vehicles?

re: the amazon. I'm at a loss as to what to do there. The companies are operating without oversight and an easily bought-off government. It's the same with doing business in most 3rd world countries. Until companies hold themselves to a higher standard, they will do whatever makes the most money.
I agree with all of that, but Scientists have come down pretty hard on the movie and it's a shame that John Kerry's supporters are using it to scare people into a vote one way or another.

Jex, which book were you talking about? I just bought the book Day After Tomorrow and it says it was based on the screen play not the other way around which makes me think it will suck like the movie.

As far as I'm concerned, we're still geologically winding down from the Ice Age in the 1300's and no one really knows how much affect we can have on it either way. I'd rather fight for trees or national parks or cleaner power and I'd rather support bioengineered wheat.

I hate to say it, but an area of land that has 10 percent of it covered by vegetation is not what I'm referring to... I'm talking about double and triple canopy jungle. I'm talking about the most biologically diverse area of the world. I'm talking about the region that produces more biological discoveries than any other. Oh, yeah, and with the exception of marine algae, the part of the world most responsible for air that we can breathe...

If you think some freshly planted seedlings are the same thing as a rainforest then this discussion is useless...

Come on, of course I understand the difference. World wide we simply have more trees than we had in recent history. What kind and where is a serparate issue that McCain-Lieberman is not going to solve. It's a damn shame there seems to be nothing we can do to replace the incentive to log the Amazon clean.

As a country there is more we can do, no doubt. Until third world countries start pulling their weight, I don't think we should have to bend our society to make up for them, unless I want Brazillian hard wood floors in my house.

Oh, no, my original comment was not aimed at this legislation. It was just a general comment.

There're lots of things we, as consumers, could do to replace the incentive to destroy the Amazon River basin. But we're not willing to. At least most of us aren't...

Re: McCain- Lieberman bill - write to your rep

I got this off an e-mail and couldn't find the source at EIA, but it certainly is alarming:

According to a June 2003 report by the Energy Information Administration at the U.S. Department of Energy, this legislation would increase electricity rates by 46%, natural gas prices by 79%, and the cost of gasoline by as much as 40 cents a gallon.

The Energy Information Agency also estimated that the Climate Stewardship bill could reduce the size of the economy by $106 billion, with economic output and personal income both reduced by the legislation.

EDIT: found it
