Re: ... hit 'em where they'll feel it..

It was the parents choice to have a kid, not the kids choice to have a parent.

Providing for their kid isnt respect, its their responsibility, a responsibility they chose when they decided to have sex. And even then, they didnt have to choose to keep the kid, they could of had an abortion or put the kid up for adoption. They chose to keep the kid, therefore safety, education, food, shelter, were their responsibility to that kid. Does that earn respect? Sure it does, but its not the whole bases for it.

Kids dont need their parents to have fun, so that point is moot.

True, there is much apathy around but I think its mainly in the children. And if the parent were truly apathetic, they wouldn't even hit thier kid. They'd just let him run around and cause trouble in the supremarket and be a whiny little brat. Defintion of apathy: Lack of interest or concern, especially regarding matters of general importance or appeal; indifference. Is setting your child straight indifferent? I think not. Tapping the child may be the quickest way but also effective (proof see: me and Sniper and DdogG's kids) and therefore one could argue more efficient.

In the end its pretty much a matter of personal choice on either jex's approach or DdogG's. Both work and are completely valid.

The same social doctrine which imposes that responsibility demands respect of those who stand to meet it. If you accept and embrace the indoctrinization that imposes the responsibility, it is folly to disavow the respect that accompanies it.

In jex's scenario with sending to room, Yes that is also an option. Whilst I agree with both sides, Im stepping outta this now. All I have been grown up with, I know spankins and sending to the room are 2 options, but sometimes a wupping is what they need. Peace out..

So what should parents do to show respect to their kids Ender? I am curious as to what you feel a parent should do for respect since you don't think what I listed as respect given by the parents is enough.

Well for one this should just leave the damn kid alone. Stop forcing them to do stuff they dont want to do. Respect their right to piracy. Trust them to make the right decisions on their own. Dont yell at them if they did something wrong, yelling doesnt show anything other then the fact that you have strong lungs. If they did something wrong then tell them why its wrong dont say "because I say it is" and also dont talk down to them, most kids are smarter then they look... most... Dont try to control your kid, he isnt a smaller version of you, he has his own mind.

There is more.. just cant think of any right now.

Are you implying that Memphis is lower than Minneapolis? No, 607 vs. 903, Mempihs wins in like every category before taking population into account. They don't call it the violent crime capitol of the US for nothing. That is pretty astounding for a city with about 600K folks.

That's only valid after age 12-16, depending on the child's maturity level and how well you've taught them about choice and consequences up to that point.

My husband and I completely agree with this philosophy. If the child is 4 years old and doesn't understand the explanation, fine. But keep trying to explain as they get older because teaching reasons and cause-effect is critical. I'm not saying treat the child as an adult with an adult's reasoning power, so much as I am saying give the child a chance to understand as much as he can; they "grow up so fast"... I've heard over and over that it's really tough as a parent to keep up with what age your child really is. *shrug* As a non-parent, all I can really say is that I was raised with action=consequences, and as many whys as possible, and it seemed to work really well except for making it very hard to get along with some silly kids who were my own age but way behind in understanding life.
