My friend's was stock, except for the Valentine 1! A small group of them convoy'd down from Chicago for the meeting in Atlanta. Someplace in northern Indiana the lead car in the group told em (over those little handheld FRS radios) that a cop was up ahead because his V1 was going off. The rest of em had other, "lesser" detectors and didn't get any indication but had slowed down because of the alert. Sure enough, smokey sat in the median a little ways down.. My friend hopped on his cell phone at the next rest stop and called V1 to have a unit overnighted to the hotel in Atlanta so he could have it for the drive back.

I've heard that those RX-7's need rebuilds every 60k or so Nice autocrossers though.

Principles of good Sandbox Etiquette:
Assume good faith - Be polite, please! - Work toward agreement. - Argue facts, not personalities. - Concede a point when you have no response to it, or admit when you disagree based on intuition or taste. - Be civil. - Be prepared to apologize. In animated discussions, we often say things we later wish we hadn't. Say so. - Forgive and forget. - Recognize your own biases and keep them in check. - Give praise when due.

Treat others as you would have them treat you

I used to run a V1 on my Kawi ZX1100. I recently switched to the new Passport 8500 X50 as it is the ONLY radar detector, to my knowledge, to ever beat out the V1. I was quite impressed to I tossed the V1 and picked up the X50.

The V1 was nice on the bike though, with the addition of a 110db sounder, everyone in the group could hear the thing going off through their helmets and earplugs at any speed. Even several bikes back.

Re: In this topic, we talk about cars.

Since I work for GM, I get a company car every 45-90 days. My latest is a 2006 Suburban LTZ, complete with AWD, 6.0 V8, Navigation Radio & XM & 20" Chrome rims. Before that, i had a 2005 Suburban Z71 and prior to winter, an 2005 SSR (Aqua Blur was the color) with Auto trans.

Re: In this topic, we talk about cars.

I drive my moms mini van. Seriously. Since my parents arent the kind to just give their kids a car when they turn 16, i have to live with driving the Honda Odyssey. I sometimes joke about adding ground effects and a spoiler onto the minivan to keep from having people mistake me for a soccer mom.

Occasionally my dad lets me drive his altima, but that thing is also a piece of crap. But i feel slightly less feminine behind the wheel of an altima.

Hey, any wheels are good wheels. When i first got my license in high school, I had to drive my parents 1984 BROWN Chevy Cavalier Station Wagon (yeah, it was really hard to keep the chicks off of that babe magnet). It wasn't until senior year that i bought my 1982 Z28 Indy Pace car...man, I loved that car.

Re: In this topic, we talk about cars.

My fist ride was a '64 plymouth valiant. My second ride was a '67 plymouth valiant. My 3rd ride was an '84 buick skyhawk with a leaky sunroof such that I had to sit on a garbage bag when it rained.

My 4th ride was a 626 that had 7k in damage when it was 6 mo. old when a tourist hit it, then it got the dash ripped off by a thief, then it got flooded. I drove it for 3 more years, but in the winter it sucked because the only air was full-on ice-cold. On foggy nights, I'd literally have to balance between freezing and defrosting the windshield enough to see.

Then I drove my wife's old pathfinder that was redolent of wet dog, sounded like a dryer with a roll of quarters in it, and had no working stereo. I did this commuting from Houston to Austin every weekend all last summer.

Enjoy the minivan Santa.

Re: In this topic, we talk about cars.

The first auto that I ever owned is still sitting in my garage: an '82 F150. She's my baby and I'm keeping her forever. Actually, I'm waiting to hit the lottery so I can turn her into a GI Jane with a MarPat paint job and maybe a big ol' TG logo...

Yes, after all of the IMs and emails, I realize that I should have said more. It was early morning at highway speeds. I was going 60 mph and was rear ended by what I assume was a drunk. The impact broke traction on all four wheels of my car and after I recovered and decided that my car was still drivable without doing any additional damage, the pickup that hit me was about a half mile ahead of me. He got off the freeway and was driving too fast through a residential area and I lost sight of him... I'm fine, but extremely pissed. That LeSabre was the most luxurious car that I've ever driven on a regular basis...

Re: In this topic, we talk about cars.

You know my posts in my own damn topic seem really random but I'm going somewhere with them.

I want to ask... you see, all you guys seem to like American and European cars.. but what's with all the Jap hate? The Skyline GTR is probably one of the top 3 cars of the last decade and a half. The RX7 comes close, and the other high performance vehicles the Japs set out with (STi, EVO, S2000, Supra, there's more) are really really good at what they're meant for.

Now obviously these cars I'm listing are not what any of us (except for me but that's because I'm a kid and I ride thrills) would consider a luxurious, fun, comfortable daily driver. And obviously any BMW, any Benz, even any Porsche-- would make much more comfortable and luxurious ones, and probably more 'fun' for that matter unless you push the envelope to the bending point.

With all of that said though.... Why all the hate on the high PERFORMANCE aspect of Jap cars? They may need rebuilds more than Stefan Erikkson's Enzo, they may run on rotaries that die at about 100k instead of 2-300, they may not be as fancy inside and they may not come standard with leather and power seats- but I'll be goddamned if they lack the 'cool' aspect.

What do you guys say?

You can't compare a fully tuned vehicle to a stock vehicle from another manufacturer. A fully tuned Lexus GS430 will be a LOT more 'fun' when pushed to the bending point than the vehicles you mentioned yet still be a VERY luxurious daily driver with all the creature comforts.

As for Honda's Reliability, the S2000 has been a really major contender in my mind for when I turn 16. But I might need to really get to scraping up the cash if I want one. Realistically though I'm probably gonna have to get a Miata.

THAT is why I'm not gonna get one for my first, even though it would be my parents paying for the insurance and crap. I'd like to think I'm better than most drivers in America today because, let's face it, most of em are terrible. But the thing is I'd still try and push it if I could get away with it really easily- which isn't good. So when I get a little older and maybe just a bit more considerate hopefully, it'll be a good time to get one

The M3 is pretty much the coolest car ever. Fast and powerful, beautiful but not over the top, Safe, and can EASILY ferry around 4 people in full luxury and comfort. There's another car for me to lust after
Don't get an RX-7. They are track cars/weekend cars.. not reliable enough for someone that actually needs to get around. Well... I don't know about stock, but I don't know anyone with a stock RX-7. Good luck finding an S2000 for under 10 grand that doesn't have a rediculous amount of miles on it.

I think if I were you, I'd be looking at something like a low mileage focus. Something cheap and reliable for your first car. Actually, for 10k, you can get an SVT focus (which they dont' make anymore) and those things handle almost as well as my Si.
