Re: Eavesdropping on everybody
I read in an article that e-mails may only be encrypted with certain encryption techniques by American law. Obiously this law doesn't apply to most web-sites, but it is interesting to me that a person can now be charged with a crime for sending encrypted emails from their desk at home.
Data mining and wire-tapping is old news, so says Bush himself. When confronted about the fact that he was tapping phones, etc, he responded almost the same way that he did when the press discovered that Bush knew about the lack of WMD's way before the fact. 'This isn't new information' he said. I'm paraphrasing, but the message is clear and disturbing. And shockingly, I find myself disarmed by this response. I almost found myself going, 'yeah I guess he's right, maybe we shouldn't be so surprised.' But surprise and alarm should not be always grouped together. One old story tells that if a fish is dropped in a pot of boiling water, it will jump out to preserve itself. If the water is slowly heated with the fish in the pot, however, the fish will not react, and will end up cooked. So we must be aware of not only immediate threats, but of increasing danger that will eventually lead to our destruction.
