Re: The next Michael Jackson: Tom Cruise?

Is Agnostic believing there is no supreme being while Atheist is just a skeptic?

An agnostic believes that it is impossible to know whether or not there's a god.

An atheist doesn't believe there's a god.

You can be both at the same time. Note that an atheist does not know that there's no god...

These are definitions off the top of my head. Lemme look up the actual definitions...
Quote:
ag·nos·tic (ăg-nŏs'tĭk)
n.

1.
1. One who believes that it is impossible to know whether there is a god.
2. One who is skeptical about the existence of a god but does not profess true atheism.
2. One who is doubtful or noncommittal about something.
Quote:
a·the·ist (ā'thē-ĭst)
n.

One who disbelieves or denies the existence of god or gods.
Hmmm, so I guess an atheist might be defined as someone that "knows" that there's no god... Kinda arrogant, though, don't you think? That's like saying that you KNOW that there's no tooth fairy, when I'm absolutely positive that the tooth fairy gave me money for my teeth when I was a child.

Re: The next Michael Jackson: Tom Cruise?

From wikipedia:
Quote:
Strong atheism, sometimes called positive atheism, hard atheism or gnostic atheism, is the philosophical position that no deity exists. It is a form of explicit atheism, meaning that it consciously rejects theism. It is contrasted with weak atheism, which is the lack or absence of belief in deities, without the additional claim that deities do not exist. The strong atheist positively asserts, at the very least, that no deities exist, and may go further and claim that the existence of certain deities is logically impossible.
Quote:
Agnosticism is the philosophical view that the truth or falsity of certain claims—particularly theological claims regarding the existence of God or gods—is unknown, unknowable, or incoherent. Some agnostics infer from this that these claims are irrelevant to the meaning of life.
...
Agnosticism is distinct from strong atheism (also called "positive atheism" or "dogmatic atheism"), which denies the existence of any deities. However, the more general variety of atheism, weak atheism (also called "negative atheism", and sometimes "neutral atheism"), professes only an absence of belief in a god or gods, which is not equivalent to, but is compatible with, agnosticism. "Critical atheism" asserts that a "god" or "gods" are meaningful concepts, but that the evidence for them is not in hand, so in the interim one must take a default position of not believing in them.

You know, we can make fun of Tom Cruise all we want, but at the end of the day he's still married to Katie Holmes.

I thought they were not yet married.

I would be jealous if that sentence read married to Nicole Kidman, but since it does not I am not. Now I am jealous he was at one time married to Kidman...

haha Adrielle... you can make anything look the way you want it to! That's very clever... and no one was arguing who he WAS with, they just stated about this current soon-to-leave-Tom girlfriend/fiance. Both are beautiful in their own ways... and I'm done talking before my wife joins TG and find this post!

Re: The next Michael Jackson: Tom Cruise?

They're both babes. We should all be so lucky. Maybe it was a mistake for me to blow off those Scientology recruiters 25 years ago....

It's easier to understand the terms "atheist" and "agnostic" when you strip off the negating "a" (which means "without") from the front: "theist" (one who believes in gods) and "gnostic" (one who claims that one can know whether gods exist). These are orthogonal statements: You can express them as two axes on an XY graph. For example, one could be an agnostic theist, or a gnostic atheist.

I've started using the term "skeptic" instead of "atheist" because it more accurately represents my position without the loaded emotion brought on by the term "atheist".

One of my favorite atheist quotes:
