Re: Music

Bumpage for the newer blokes. I always thought this was a fun little thread (well, 9 pages long isn't really little).

And I have to give props to the guys in this thread who recommended me some electronic music a few months ago. Since then I have become a dance music fiend. I've been turned onto trance, techno, breaks, electro, hardstyle and hardcore, have amassed a considerable vinyl + cd collection and have spent many a day/night out at festivals, raves and the odd nightclub. The highlight of this month has been seeing Eddie Halliwell, Above & Beyond, Cosmic Gate and Matt Hardwick a few days ago..and all thanks to TGers (in a roundabout fashion).

I luff choo guys.

Re: Music

I quite like some of the drum and bass that is fed to me. I never really go out and explore the D n' b world but I quite like Pendulum and Freelance Hellraiser.

Check out Freestylers feat. Pendulum - Painkiller.

Also, a band called the Klaxons are getting quite big in the UK. They are kind of dancey music and it's pretty good.

Re: Music

an old, obscure, but good album is rough mix, by Pete Townsend and the late Ronnie Lane. One of the songs just came on my yahoo radio.

Hey does anyone else use this? I love it. You can customize your own station that plays stuff you've told it you like, and it'll play new stuff based on genres and prior selections. After a while you start to get a nice eclectic mix of great stuff. And if a bad song comes on you can skip it (right after giving it a "never play this again" rating).

Pandora is much, much better, IMO.

I'll check it out.

For an annual fee, yahoo radio is pretty hi fi. How is the sound quality with Pandora?

I'll definitely check them out some time. I <3 Pendulum and The Prodigy.

Re: Music

Pandora has great sound quality I would say. I've been using it for a few years now. I'm currently listening to some:

Bloc Party
Bright Eyes
Chris Isaak
We Are Scientists
Regina Spektor (Thanks Smoking Tarpan )
Carla Brunii (SP?)

I don't really listen to music while I'm gaming. For me it's too much of a distraction from all the other sounds that play a huge role in the game. I generally listen to music while working, exercising (if ever ), and cleaning. Oh and while I'm trying to learn a new song on the guitar I'll listen to the song hundreds of times too.

Re: Music

Yeah I like yahoo better. Pandora seems to be good for finding related music, but doesn't provide eclectic, which is what I like. I want to hear Black Sabbath followed by Steve Tibbetts followed by Patsy Cline, Radiohead, John Coltraine, Steely Dan, Tool, The Cars, Sinatra, Toots & the Maytals, etc.

I can get that with my yahoo station. Can I get that with Pandora?

Re: Music

Probably not, unless you create seperate channels for whatever music doesn't sound similar. Remember though, Pandora's not necessarily created to play music from artists you already know, rather, it plays music from artists who share the same musical characteristics (harmony, tone, voice etc.) but are probably less known or rarely heard of. Yahoo stations ARE pretty good too though. I listen to their stations when I'm IMing or surfing sometimes too.

Re: Music

http://www.myspace.com/sleepytimegorillamuseum I like the songs sleep and 1997.

You will absolutly hate them if you arent into experimental and post-rock. I guess you could say its a niche group.

Re: Music

Sleepytime is pretty awesome. I've always been curious how they came up with that name.

One of my personal favorite post-rock bands, probably second only to Godspeed You! Black Emperor. D is for Dead Sea is the best song they have up there; the cello work (even though I know nothing about cellos) is pretty much amazing.

Re: Music

Oh, and these guys http://www.myspace.com/agalloch are the best metal band at work right now. Check the song Not Unlike the Waves, it's so epic.

Re: Music

As far as metal goes, I gotta stick with Mastodon. I saw them here at Emo's last week and they were epic. The normally docile/apathetic Austin rock crowd was totally unruly for that show. It was great.
