Re: Music
This post sure got off and running quick, Renegade!
There is so much good music out there, it's hard not to appreciate it all. I think almost everything that has been posted is stuff I like...

I love enya. Not a big John Mayer fan, I'd prefer Jack Johnson or something similar. If you like enya, you should check out Loreena McKennit. Oh, and for anyone who is interested in finding music that they like, you can create your own station at www.pandora.com and it compiles music and artists that resemble whatever song you choose to base your selection off of. I love it! ![]()

Re: Music
I feel random compared to some of the other lists. Looking through my CD collection I see:
+ Queen (the older the better) + Cure + Beastie Boys + Peter Gabriel + Sting + Depeche Mode (yeah I was one of those people in high school) + REM (before they lost their religion) + U2 (pre Zooropa) After that there's a category of 80s pop, 70s-90s rock (Van Halen, Billy Idol, etc.), some punk (just put Bad Brains back in the car), some old school rap (the Run-DMC, old LL Cool J type, way pre gangsta), some mixed alternative from the last several years. I have to say that I am rediscovering music. This year I've purchased 3 albums, which is the same amount I purchased in the last 5 years combined. Latest pickups are Matisyahu, Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly. Oh, and if you guys want a trip, try listening to Enya's Watermark while scrapbooking. I hear it's about the same thing as watching Wizard of Oz to Dark Side of the Moon. ![]() |

Hmm... this Genome thing is really neat.
I suggest everyone check it out, definetly. Excellent find Adrielle. On a deeper note, I'm amazed how fast the posts for this topic piled up. I left for about a day and I came back to at least 20 different posters and 40-someodd replies. Definetly keep this goin, this is exactly the response I was hoping for. I'll compile a profile for myself for my next post, but for now my questions are these: Is anyone else really interested in why ceratin people listen to certain types of music? Cause... that facinates me. I think that's delving somewhat into psychology, but I'm not quite sure. Most of you guys are older and have at least a bit of college under your belt. Any insights? Thanks and thanks again, ~Renagade

Re: Music
Yeah that goes under the realm of psychology, but for the most part I think I can understand most of the reasons people listen to what they do, and most of the time those reasons can be the same for Dripping fans, or Depeche Mode fans, or Slipknot fans.
Which btw Depeche Mode are awesome and I missed them on tour for Playing the Angel last year ![]() |

Re: Music
Sorry to go a little off topic here but how do you work the last.fm player? Does it only play music when you type in related artists and listen to those songs that are similar?
I don't see how to play my own songs or I'm not even sure if I'm supposed to or what... |

When I was in college I was a psych minor, lol. Anyhow, ... yes, I've always found the link between 'kinds' of people and the kind of music they listen to interesting. There are a few theories I've coined about it ... keep in mind this information is based solely on individuals I've encountered in my life.People who only listen to one band or one kind of "sound", I've found to be more closed-minded about other things than those who listen to a variety of genres. I've also found, however that these people usually have more direction and are more likely to know exactly what they want, whereas people who listen to all genres tend to be indecisive in other aspects of their lives. There are other weird psychological things that I've seen with music. The one that bothers me the most is this: I have this friend who listens to alternative/punk mostly, and she publicly "hates" my taste in music (which is ironic because I like pretty much everything), yet when we're in the car driving along, she seems to enjoy my music. She sings along, taps her feet, etc. She even puts songs on repeat so she can listen to them again and again. I called her on it once. Essentially, she hates "pop" music because of the cliche that is associated with it, not because she actually dislikes the music. I said, "So, basically, you don't like pop music because too many other people like it?" *silence implicating "yes"* "You realize how stupid that is, right? Not listening to music you like because it doesn't match your "non-conformist" image, ... you realize that shutting yourself off from music you like because people who've adopted your similar "image" don't like it is ... conforming?" *silence* I just thought that was really strange. You like what you like. People who think less of you for liking a certain style of music or whatever are really closed-minded, and if they blow you off simply based on your 'taste' then they're not trying to get to know you for you anyhow. I've also noticed that most people who like techno like mathematics. (Mmm, randomness) It's 4am. I SO shouldn't be trying to form coherent thoughts.

Re: Music
One more question I'd like to pose:
What moves you more about a song: the interpretation of sound or the interpretation of lyrics? I ask because some of my favorite songs (not to mention the ones that move me the most) have no lyrics. I interpret songs through how they sound, not what they say. In fact, I usually don't even pay any (conscious) attention to lyrics until about the 3rd or 4th time I listen to a song, ... and by then I find I usually know most of the words without knowing I did. To me, lyrics are secondary, ... but I also know that a lot of people I've come across completely disagree and think that's crazy. Hmm, ... I wonder what kind of psychological information you can gather from something like that ...

Re: Music
YoHo!
Well, since a lot of people seem to be in agreement about the music they like, I wanted to throw out something a just a little different. I actually didn't listen to a lot of english music untill I was in middle school, so up until around 1997, all I listened to Hong Kong Canto-pop. Since it's really easy to find Chinese CD's where I live, I've been able to listen to a lot of Chinese music, going back WAAAY before I was born. In middle school and high school, english-wise I listened to Alternative rock, with Third Eye Blind being my favorite. Metal always annoyed me, so I'm sorry I can't agree with most of you guys. However, at the end of high school, American music had lost its flair for me (how many times can Linkin Park sing about not being what other people want them to be???) and HK pop really became derivative. So now, I'm really into Japanese Indie rock, which really has an Alternative sound with a nice Asian feel. So, after the tale of my musical history, here is the current list of bands I like to listen to: - Asian Kung Fu Generation (Try "Loop & Loop" or "Kimi no Machi Made") - The Pillows (Try "Nonfiction") - Sparta Locals (Try "Tokyo Ballerina") One of my friends would also recommend Bump of Chicken and Ellegarden, though I haven't had too much time to listen to them myself. I'm also interested in a band called Soulsberry, but their music has been rather hard for me to come by. Hopefully, I added a bit of a different perspective to this discussion? I'm sure there are some other people here who listen to import music and I hope they're not too scared to share! Cheers!

Re: Music
I can't believe that I am so out of the loop with Tool that I didn't realize their new album was leaked. I've seen them play in concert 5 times (I think?) and have loved every show. I had the opportunity to go see A Perfect Circle also. Amazing stuff.
As for other bands out there that I enjoy- The Pixies The Cure Big Audio Dynamite The Muse Audioslave (when Chris Cornell remembers that he doesn't have to screech) Nirvana Daft Punk Tori Amos Smashing Pumpkins Modest Mouse Dead Can Dance Wolfsheim Many others that I don't want to bore you with. Addie, to answer your question about if I get into the music or the lyrics- in truth, it just depends on what I'm listening to. If I can immerse myself in what I am listening to, it's the whole big picture that I am enjoying- the harmony between music and lyrics, or lack thereof.

Re: Music
It really depends on the band. A Perfect Circle, for instance, is a band that I would find hard to enjoy if not for Maynard's voice and lyrics. Same with Tool. But then again, that's typically because their songs (that contain lyrics) are geared to contain lyrics. Ignoring them leaves something out. Whereas songs like Triad, that aren't made to have lyrics, sound fine without them.
