Bad Religion (lead singer taught evolutionary biology at cornell univ)

NOFX (lead singer started legendary label FAT WRECHORDS)

The Pogues (lead singer is possibly the ugliest man to ever live........amazing band though)

Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies (all cover punk band..... you aint heard a denver song till its sung by these guys)

Social Distortion (mike ness is the second coolest man to ever live)

Minor Threat (i just love 'em)

..ok so there are a few other bands i love that arent punk rock and havent been mentioned..

Johnny Cash (the coolest man to ever live)

Megadeth (i often thank god that mustaine was kicked outta metallica cause this band may never have happened.....and metallica sucks.....always have)

I'm invested heavily in the Chieftains (I have all of their albums + 7 original LP's) and Shaun Davey. Jazz is Monk (Jr), Davis, Coltrane, & Brubeck. I'm working on filling in my vyn jazz collection, but I'm not trying too hard

EDIT: haha, I have a few Loreena McKennitt CD's as well.

Edit: Some "techno" music is very compositionally rich and intellectualy engaging. Some of it really jogs my mind. Not quite like the 9th or anything, but I listen to some stuff that approaches that for me.

Also, I have been known to enjoy 'rap' I'm not really interested in the hardcore stuff (unless the lyrics are smart and the rhymes are quick), but more of the g-funk and whimsical. Like Dr. Octagon. Jamiroquai is great. He made it worth watching Napoleon Dynamite to the end. (yeah, I know he's not rap )

Re: Music

Johnny Cash is good (I only have MP3's of him though). So is Kenny Rogers, Hank, Nelson, Brooks (both of 'em), and Glenn Campbell. Pat Humphries has some really catchy folk-lesson songs out as well. I'm not really fleshed out in country music, though. But I'm getting there.

EDIT: Check out http://www.ishkur.com/music/ for a comprehensive guide to electronic music. It's a fun site. Crank up the 303's

Re: Music

My mom game some old Sabbath vinyls, original copies, in good condition to me.

And alot of electronica (techno is a subgenre) is VERY engaging, not much of it is even danceable. Aphex Twin for example.

As for good rap, if ANYONE in this thread has not heard Busdriver, Del the Funky Homosapien or Deltron 3030, I highly advise them all to check all 3 out this very instance.

Re: Music

I'm completely lost when it comes to dance music and electronica, but I'd like to get an appreciation for it. Any suggestions?

Re: Music

as far as electronica id suggest..

orbital
aphex twin
the dust brothers (they did the fight club soundtrack)
paul oakenfold
underworld (later stuff)
the crystal method

these are all pretty mainstream, so you should be able to find them anywhere you get music
if you like any of those then start looking around at other DJs cause even the lowliest unpopular DJ can sound pretty good

if youre interested in the roots of electronica and want to hear what people call the first techno then check out "kraftwerk"

I do! I have about 1000 lps, a Sota Comet turntable, Audioquest PT-9 tonearm, Audioquest Emerald phono cable, and a Grado Sonata cartridge, all sitting in a storage center right now.

I'm not big on rap either....Dr. Octagon is fantastic though. I usually listen to the stuff on the fringe, where something interesting/cool is being done: Quasimodo, Lateef/Lyrics Born, Mike Ladd, Forest Fires Collective, Sage Francis, DJ. Spooky, DJ Krush, etc.

You know, sometimes I think I'm Indie Pete from Diesel Sweeties: If other people like it, it must suck.

Re: Music

With rap, I like Snoop, NWA, Public Enemy, Chuck D, Ice Cube, Dre, etc.

I think they're fantastic musicians and the production value is top knotch.

Wow, where to start.

DJ Tiesto has a set of discs called In Search of Sunrise. #3 and #4 are about as good an introduction into the state of trance as you can get.

Other DJ luminaries are Paul Oakenfold (bit to commercial for me-Great Wall is his best IMO), Sasha (His Global Underground discs are classic), John Digweed (Try Global Underground 006-Sydney), and on the house side, anything by Deep Dish.

Sasha and Digweed also did a series called Northern Exposure. The first is a double CD which leans on the more spacey side. The second, was broken up into East and West discs. This set should be essential listening for....well, just about everyone. The last one in the series (Expeditions) was also good, but not as good as the others.

For techno, on one extreme you have semi-melodic stuff like orbital and Underworld (I disagree with the later recommendation-Get dubnobasswithmyheadman-it's an acidtrip in a box!), and at the other end, Autechre, Aphex Twin, etc. and lots of stuff inbetween.

House, well, I generally don't listen to house, so I'm no help there. Deep Dish is as close as I get.

There is a great Podcast, Space Music with TC, that you should check out for an introduction to Chillout/ambient/space.

Drum and Bass is the bastid child of hip-hop and techno. It ranges from jazzy stuff that's quite good as background music (LTJ Bukem), to stuff that sounds like drills left on tabletops. The first Metalhedz collection is as good an introduction as any.
