Re: Music

I'm way off the map here, but if anyone cares - I listen primarily to jazz, and within that genre I primarily focus on be bop and hard bop - Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Thelonious Monk, and on down the list. I'm a huge fan of some of the famous big band guys - Count Basie (for improv) and Duke Ellington (for composition). As a guitar player, I have plenty of Wes Mongomery, Charlie Christian and of course the enigma - Django Reinhardt. I also listen to other jazz genres, but nothing very new except for the occasional artist that has some of the old blood in their soul.

My other mainstays are old time blues and folk (the likes of Harry Smith's anthologies - Doc Boggs, Rev. Gary Smith, Lightnin' Hopkins, John Hurt, Clarence Ashley, etc), 'roots' bluegrass - as in Bill Monroe and the Stanley Brothers on up to J.D. Crowe and the New South.

My biggest musical heroes are Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Miles Davis and Bill Monroe, all representative of historically critical genres in American music (Rock, Folk, Jazz, Bluegrass).

Most obscure recommendation I can make for this thread - Moog Cookbook. Intricate and amazingly perceptive renditions of popular songs using vintage moog synthesizers.

I bet you'd like Gillian Welch. No-one who likes guitar should miss David Rawlings.

Re: Music

Is it strange that I can't stand listening to Bob Dylan? Lyrical genious, but his vocals are, ... imo, ... horrendous.

Check and check!! And another masterful small-bodied guitar picker: Norman Blake.

Re: Music

Just wanted to bump this with the thought that the Barenaked Ladies might be the most talented pure musicians on this earth. They're able to make music anytime and anyhow, unlike many "groomed" acts that most people think are better...

Re: Music

I got 10,000 Days last Tuesday, and while at first I had lackluster impressions, as I've been listening to it I've found myself liking it alot more. Of course, it's been a while since I listened to any of their other albums, so I'm not about to make a comparison.

Yeah, I've thought about posting my initial thoughts on 10,000 days as well. My first thoughts were that it seemed familiar - I still think it sounds a lot like Lateralus 2. That said, Lateralus was, by far, my favorite tool album to date. I quite enjoyed my first listen, and I like it a little more each time.

I also had some mixed impressions at first for the 10000 days album, but it grew on my as well. Some of the lyrics, particularly for the song 10000 days are well done. Right in Two would have to be my favorite track, as it really starts to rock in the second half of the song, and the lyrics are cool to boot.

I dont think this is Lateralus 2, though. Most of the songs dont have anything to do with eachother in terms of meaning, but Lateralus was connected from song to song. Also, this is the first Tool album since Maynard's mom's death, and both wings for marie and 10000 days are about her death and how he doesnt understand why after being paralyzed, his mom got an even deeper faith in Christianity. In A Perfect Circle, the song Judith is also about his mother. This theme about his mom doesnt go on from song to song, because Vicarious is about our apathy towards people dying in war on our TVs, and Right in Two is about how humans are always killing eachother and its our free will thats partly the cause of it. I dont know what the rest of the songs mean, but i assume they are completely different from one another.

Yeah, you're right that are differences. I was only commenting on how it sounds superficially. I haven't read the lyrics yet, and I'm awful at being able to hear the words from the actual song.

And that's a whole bunch of crazy facts!

Re: Music

Haha, good lord...
I feel compelled to alert the world of an incredible new band I just found.

If any of you enjoy rock and musically skillful bands you HAVE to check out DragonForce
Sure their lyrics are slightly cheezy, but my God can they rock.

Their website lets you listen to the songs on the New CD, I would HIGHLY suggest listening to 'Through The Fire And The Flames'. It's absolutely fantastic.

Check them out NOW, if you've the time: http://www.dragonforce.com/

Happy listening, and thank you for all your awesome responses once again.
~Renagade

PS. If anyone has heard of DragonForce and/or has heard of any other bands like them PLEASE PM me or post it or something. Thanks again.

*Cough*

I felt like I had stepped into a time machine back into the 80s while listening to that song. That's the kind of stuff that would blare from the "stoners" section of the quad in high school. Y'know, the guys that owned nothing but blue jeans, black concert tshirts and plaid shirts? Long hair and they smoked right in front of teachers instead of behind the building?
