good gravy.... i just googled their homepage......this is just crazy. i know these people have the right to free speech, but you do have to think that their protests could be directed at something a little less personal than a funeral.

if they really wanted to get their message of "god hates you" out to the people they could maybe try a bake sale or something a little less contraversial

btw. if those guys showed up to one of my family members funerals withthat crap i would beat the living ........ out of the nearest adult male in the group and i cant imagine a single cop who would arrest me.

I've had more than one run in with these freaks. I almost went to jail less than a month after 9/11 for getting into it with a group of them.

Did you know that they bring their children to these events. It really breaks your heart to see a normal looking 7 year old holding up a sign that reads "God Hates ****" and "Thank God for Dead Soldiers". I was called a "Fornicator [that will] burn in hell" by a 12 year old that I had never said a word to. I tried to get her to tell me who her daddy was so I could "have a word with him", but it seemed all she was taught to say is "Burn in Hell, fornicator", so I "had a talk" with the guy holding the "Thank God for 9/11" sign instead.

I can honestly tell you from experience that, Denver cops at least, will handcuff you, walk you around the corner and then tell you to leave or they will have to arrest you.

I've always wondered how the Bible can be quoted as the undeniable truth if over half of the world never saw it until we showed up on their shores with it. It's a great read with many valuable points and ideas, however it can be twisted like anything else and it shouldn't ever be assumed as the ultimate authority, especially when it has been translated and retranslated for thousands of years to the point that the newly written message has drastically different connotations.

Edit: This is the first time I can recall in a long time that I've been totally on the side of Fox News. It is really great to see the right fighting the ultra-right just as our left fights its ultra-left. Fox News isn't bad, CNN isn't bad, it's these people who are bad and I think this clip in particular really shows us that. Moderation is the key, and whether you lean right or left doesnt matter, just steer yourself clear of the radicals. Thank god for the Republicans and the Democrats, our sweeping general parties keep these freaky radicals from gaining any sort of influential voice in our government. Huey Long from the 30's should be remembered, his ultra-left actions could have split the left, cost us Roosevelt in 1936, and propelled himself to presidency in 1940. He was assassinated, and I can see the same happening to Fred Phelps in a similar situation. If a time of crisis were to come around now, you can bet millions more people would jump on this insane ultra-right bandwagon and lobby for some ultra-right candidate to turn America into a theocracy. Fear the radicals, no matter what side.

I'm sure you've all heard of this by now. A group from a Baptist Church in Kansas travels around the nation to military funerals to protest. They say troops are dying because the US is friendly to gay people. I actually have the chance to witness this today as the freak show is coming to my town.

I work in the news media, so I've been charged with covering the story. Wish me luck, and I'll let you know what I find.

I was going to post a link to the Detroit Free Press story on the funeral today, but apparently I need more posts. Could someone PM me and link it for me?

Just got back. Over 130 bikers showed up to counter protest the 6 or 7 protesters there. It was a great sight, and kind of tear-jerking to see everyone waving flags and blocking out the protesters.

I actually got to talk to one of the protesters and asked her who is she to judge. All she said is, you're judging me! You're judging me! I just laughed.

This happened in central PA too. All the vets showed up and blocked the protesters from the family. It was the same group of idiots. Good job on preventing them from getting to the family.

The bikers are from www.Patriotguard.org . We (I am a member) are a group of patriots just trying to do the right thing for our troops, both fallen and still with us. Check out the forums and you will find that the group is not just bikers anymore, it is folks from all walks of life, male, female, old, young, there are no requirements other than honoring our troops and our country. I found out about the Patriot Guard when a friend of mine was injured in Iraq and later died from his injuries. The Westborough Baptist Church (protesters) was at Josh's funeral, about 8 of them anyway. There were approximately 300-500 Patriot Guard and locals there. It was an amazing sight, turning the corner to go to the church and seeing a sea of flags in support.
