Re: Chernobyl Anniversary

I guess part of the reason why it seems so empty and distant for me personally is because the buildings, the houses and the streets seem representative of an era which is beyond my recollection and so far from anything which I can relate to.

Thanks for clarifying. Guess we can go back in the zone now, since the whole thing is a hoax.

Ad hominem means attacking the messenger, or the person making the argument, instead of the argument itself. I linked to two posts that basically outline how it was a hoax and in what ways the truth deviated from what the lady said she did. How is that attacking the person instead of the message?

For this you called her "A fraud," based on two third hand forum posts. Whether she rode her bike alone or not is irrelevant and unfascinating compared to what she documented. The documentation is the topic of her site, not the means of transportation. To call her a fraud and the trip a hoax based on this smacks of logical fallacy.

Re: Chernobyl Anniversary

I don't think those links say much more than that there are a couple other people somewhere on the internet in another forum that believe it was a hoax.

Now, if you said that you took the same trip and had pictures etc. to discredit her then that would be a little more convincing.

Actually she updated her site after those posts were made to add more content and the video's. A lot of her pics show the geiger counter readings right in them which directly contradicts the content of the postings that said you could walk in the fields.

True. I guess that part of the fascination with Chernobyl is that, as munchkin said, the area is locked in an age that I've never been witness to. While visiting N.O. would still be silent and devastating, it would be more modern. Sure, the Chernobyl area was taken out only 20 years ago, but the buildings and such look like they still belong to the 1930's and earlier.

Re: Chernobyl Anniversary

When I read the "Documentary" what facinated me was not at all the person riding the motorcycle, I had no sense of any heroic acts whatsoever. I enjoyed the way she was able to describe the place, and how she describes the accident's affect on the area. Even though she did not ride a bicycle through the area she has certainly written a damn good story. I think it is too harsh to call this thing a hoax, she has taken artistic liberties, the story about the events are mostly solid.

Re: Chernobyl Anniversary

Yes, I agree. I searched for around an hour and only found about 2-3 citations that say its a hoax.

One of them is not very credible (a web forum), but the other is the author of the book "Wormwood". I'm not sure if the author has some info other than just stating that it was a hoax. (Thats all I read on the authors web site in the FAQ, no evidence-just a statement about Elena being an internet hoax.)

So, if she took a bunch of artistic liberties well I don't mind, I can make up my own mind from the pictures and videos about what there is to see. I found the entire "civilization frozen in time" very intriguing.
