Re: Tasers revisited (video)

i found this video very scary, why didnt the cop grab yer woman and pull her outta the car while his partner coverd him with the taser, i know she was quite mad and all but i dunno if she was really worth a taser, and the cop seemed like he was dying to use it. I think some one said that cops have to treat all potential fellons with the suspicion that they have a gun which sounds like every one has a gun, and says something about maybe you should ban guns but thats a whole other kettle of fish. Im scared of america even more after seeing this thing i dont think the women deserved it looked like excessive force to me if there was no tazer would he have shot her? the cop should have just pulled her outta the car and got her on the ground and so on.

No, he would have had to "go hands-on", which would be much more likely to injure either her or him, or both of them. The Taser avoided that.

Re: Tasers revisited (video)

What would happen if she fell, broke an arm and sued for excessive use of force?

I'm not bothered by the fact that a LEO will use force to make me (or anyone else) comply because there is a camera recording everything on tape.

She'd spend a lot of money on a lawsuit that she won't win... Failing to comply with a law enforcement officer making an arrest is a crime. Resisting arrest is a crime. Accidentally hurting someone that is resisting arrest is not a crime.

But is it possible that someone is hurt with a Taser? Sure. But, looking at the big picture, Tasers are preventing injuries to both cops and robbers. I'm sure we could point at the rare occasions when a seat belt has caused someone to be trapped in a burning car, but those are easily dismissed by the massive numbers of injuries avoided by the majority of accidents where vehicle occupants used their seat belts.

Re: Tasers revisited (video)

I'd say that from my view of being a non-violence/non-lethal weapons advocate, tasers looks like a huge step in the correct direction. And if LEOs are happy with the weapon it would most probably be used instead of guns(where possible).

Nice point, but I was thinking about the other hypothetical situation (where the cop drags her out of the car). I agree with you though

I don't think there's any doubt that a person is more likely to get hurt when resisting arrest and having a police officer grapple you to the ground, than if someone is tased and simply collapses to the ground.

Regardless, the police officer would be able to articulate how he used only the force necessary to make the arrest and the lawsuit would get thrown out.

Re: Tasers revisited (video)

Ha!

My office building has uniformed police on duty in the lobby for some reason. They carry their pistols on one side and tasers on the other. One day a female cop had a bag of peanuts tucked into her belt right behind the taser and I had to resist asking "do you carry your peanuts on your left so you don't accidentally shoot yourself?"

Hahahaha. You should have asked.

Re: Tasers revisited (video)

OK, I found a cool example of how Tasers keep everyone safer. This video shows a HUGE man that is resisting arrest and becomes compliant after being tased. Unfortunately, I found it on MySpace and I have no idea how to get it off there and hosted elsewhere: http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fu...eoid=953811196
