I don't know if you'd call these sleepers, but most people I know didn't see these unless I sat them down and made them watch.

State and Main
- "They say it takes all kinds." "That's what it takes? I always wondered what it took."
- "You know what you've got there? You've got a hook in your finger!"
- "Aren't you supposed to set an example for people?" "Nope, you're supposed to hold their hands while they die."

The Return

I'm not really a film buff and I usually only see more popular films but this movie certainly sucked me in.

Good thread leejo.

Some documentaries:

Baraka. In-f-ing-credible. You have to watch it on a big screen though, with the sound turned way up.

Also, and this sounds cheesy, but March of the Penguins was really really good, too.

And Crumb was whacked out, funny, and disturbing.

Oh hell yes! I saw that in Palestine, of all places, and it was awesome! A few boring stretches, but really amazing. I've been drying to find it to rent around here. No luck.

The Wizard of Speed and Time, both the 1979 short and the 1989 feature-length expansion. Jittlov's stop-motion work was a big hit at MIT.

I was SHOCKED when I found that my friends never saw Requiem for a Dream until I showed it to them.

Love that movie. Addictive (IRONICALLY), yet depressing as hell, ... yet beautiful.

A definite experience.

Agreed. But when my roommate and I rented it for a weekend, we thought it was so good we watched it like 4 times. We were so emo that weekend.

<3<3<3 for Darren Aronofsky or however you spell it.

Pi was incredible. My brother (aptly) described the last 20 minutes of Requiem as being repeatedly hit in the face with a baseball bat. And he meant that in a good way.
