To measure how wide something is, you measure it's width. to measure how high something is, my father-in-law measures it's "heighth"

Oh. Conspriacy. Of course. This word would get my vote as well. Another for me would be "WAN Network".

Re: Irregardless...
"NIC Card" and a lot of other redundant networking terms don't really bother me, depending on who is saying them. When a Librarian or other non-technically inclined person uses them (or I am forced to use them to explain the issue to them), it's not a big deal for me. These people just don't need to know this stuff: that's my job.
Now, when another Networking Tech/Admin is using them, I get annoyed.

Re: Irregardless...
I started to post here about "myriad", which was taught to me as an adjective ("the myriad stars in the sky"), and which I regularly (and, so I thought, incorrectly) hear used as a noun ("the sky has a myriad of stars").
As it turns out, Dictionary.com says myriad can be used correctly as a noun or an adjective. Maybe it all happened before I came on the scene, and maybe my education just sucked, but the dictionary does make a usage note about the word's transformation from a noun to an adjective over the centuries. That surprised me, and it reminded me of a prediction I decided on a year or two ago. Call it "giving up": In time, 'their' will become "correct usage" as a third-person possessive singular pronoun. It'll happen for the same reason "today" isn't hyphenated anymore, "myriad" isn't just a noun anymore, and "ain't" is in the dictionary: it's what people do, and that's not going to change.

Re: Irregardless...
True, true. I believe it is Oxford that, when they add words every year to the dictionary, people always write in about the death of the English language and things like that - especially with words like "bling-bling". Another rule they have is that once a word goes into the dictionary, it is never removed. The idea is that Oxford is a record of all of English, past and present.
While I'm not sure about items like their, they're and there in particular, the language does evolve and change over time. What's wrong today may be right tomorrow.
