I hate redundant acronyms. VAT tax anyone? There are more.

Re: Irregardless...

Huh? What's wrong with Sequel? You're talking about structured query language, right? Formerly known as Structured English Query Language, aka SEQUEL?

Re: Irregardless...

No it's "sequel" Bommando. At least round these parts.

http://www.google.com/search?q=defin...en-US:official

And from that damn wikipedia:

During the 1970s, a group at IBM's San Jose research center developed a database system "System R" based upon, but not strictly faithful to, Codd's model. Structured English Query Language ("SEQUEL") was designed to manipulate and retrieve data stored in System R. The acronym SEQUEL was later condensed to SQL because the word 'SEQUEL' was held as a trademark by the Hawker-Siddeley aircraft company of the UK.

But "sequel" lived on, apparently.

Right or wrong, I've worked with a ton of DBAs and we've talked about a lot of "sequel" statements.

Re: Irregardless...

Nonono you're absolutely free to be irked. Lord knows I wouldn't try to come between Bommando and an irk!

I just think that SQL is an acronym for "structured query language" and the word "sequel" that people use instead of "ess cue ell" is pretty standard and accepted here.

I say things like "sequel statment" and "sequel server" all the time, so I was worried that I was being a doofus instead of merely annoying you.

Re: Irregardless...

Ok I've done another search: http://www.google.com/search?q=is+sq...en-US:official

It seems that there are some in the know who think that SQL should be pronounced "sequel" and others who consider it better to say "ess cue ell". Seems to me like two other words I like:

chartreuse (correctly pronounced "char-truhz" instead of the vulgar "char-troos")
short-lived (correctly pronounced "short l'eye ved" instead of the vulgar "short lived")

Re: Irregardless...

"ess cue ell" is certainly more precise.

So do you say "ess cue ell statement" and "ess cue ell server"?

Man, I always have. I just think Texas is weird.

Oh, and "supposably".

Re: Irregardless...

The phrase, "Since the dawn of time..." used too frequently, and often doesn't really mean "the dawn of time."

"Back in the day'

doorwall (southern term for a sliding door I think)

Peripheral

Cascade (corporate jargon for "pass this down to the peons who works for us")

Now that i typed it, JARGON pisses me off.

Matrices (how many times do you really need to use the plural of Matrix ??)

matriculate (makes me laugh just saying it out loud)

TomKat ('Tom Cruise' + 'Katie Holmes')

And just plain old 'Tom Cruise'

Principles of good Sandbox Etiquette:
Assume good faith - Be polite, please! - Work toward agreement. - Argue facts, not personalities. - Concede a point when you have no response to it, or admit when you disagree based on intuition or taste. - Be civil. - Be prepared to apologize. In animated discussions, we often say things we later wish we hadn't. Say so. - Forgive and forget. - Recognize your own biases and keep them in check. - Give praise when due.

Treat others as you would have them treat you

Too bad they didn't pick Laflack. THAT would almost have been an onomatopoeia!
