Re: Irregardless...

heh heh. The Onion ran a story on the top things that his publicist was advising him against when they were dating. #2 was changing his name to B'Fleck. That was the cause of some chortling at the time.

Principles of good Sandbox Etiquette:
Assume good faith - Be polite, please! - Work toward agreement. - Argue facts, not personalities. - Concede a point when you have no response to it, or admit when you disagree based on intuition or taste. - Be civil. - Be prepared to apologize. In animated discussions, we often say things we later wish we hadn't. Say so. - Forgive and forget. - Recognize your own biases and keep them in check. - Give praise when due.

Treat others as you would have them treat you

Re: Irregardless...

Solutions. Especially in corporate taglines. Take out the word and 9 times of 10 you understand what they do better.

I also hate Orientated.

Re: Irregardless...

Nice thread. I just discovered it...

ALRIGHT, the first word that comes to mind that I enjoy.... "ORCHARD".

Really. It just popped in there and I approved. As a piece of trivia, Chicago O'Hare has the three letter ID "ORD" because it was known as Orchard Field until it was renamed O'Hare in 1949.

Anyway, I honestly have a pet peeve about people confusing envy with jealousy, but it's done on a such a regular basis jealousy pretty much wins the day in common usage.

I used to grind my teeth when I overheard someone say "I'm going scuba diving in the caribbean next week" and then heard "ohhhh, I'm soooooooooo jealous!!!".

Jealousy is when you fear infidelity or fear being usurped. "A jealous husband".

Envy is when you desire what someone else has.

Modern dictionaries are starting to to loosen their definitions of jealousy. It's just one of those things that makes you aware of how fluid languages are and how quickly a certain vernacular becomes obsolete.

Re: Irregardless...

Nauseous vs. nauseated. Dictionaries are now accepting common usage, but as recently as a few years ago the words still meant

Nauseous: causing or able to cause nausea; "a nauseating smell"; "nauseous offal"; "a sickening stench"

Nauseated: feeling nausea; feeling about to vomit

When people would say "I feel nauseous" I'd say "no kidding!".

Correct is "That smell is nauseous. It makes me feel nauseated."

Re: Irregardless...

This is a good direction. People also confuse borrow with lend:

"Hey buddy, can you borrow me a dollar?"

And am I the only one who is annoyed by people confusing upload with download?

qft.

That and I hate how people compare any sort of rules and enforcement of the rules as "NAZI."

Re: Irregardless...

Reiterate

It's in the dictionary, but I don't think it should be... since the word iterate means "To say or perform again; repeat." I'll re-repeat it for you..

"So, let's reiterate, I'm a moron irregardless of what you think."

Yeah, they knew how to blow the roof off the mutha sucka. Blow the roof off the sucka.

There was this short phase in the 90s where it seemed that the thing was to use PH instead of F on words like Funk --> Phunk. Drove me nuts. Then in the late 90s everything became X- this and X- that. Now, it's i-This and i-That.
