Re: The OFFICIAL TG FIFA World Cup 06 Predictions/discussion/hype thread

I can't possibly be the only one that knows what I'm referring to, am I? I guess if you like the game, it's easier to become blind to it all. Read the papers. Watch the sports. Listen to local sports and every national sports talk show out there. There is and has been for some time a general consensus that soccer is a lesser sport compared to football or baseball for instance. I could get into why but it's not worth replying to "soccer guy" who will defend the sport to his death.

There is nothing wrong with a person for liking soccer, it's a free world. But along with negative stance against it from the sports world, it is also my opinion that the game just can't compare to the other major sports out there. Though, I would rather watch soccer than the WNBA.

And yes... I did play soccer when I was younger and I even helped teach it at a younger level but when it comes down to it, there are so many things wrong with it that it's just not worth people's time. And this year's team helped prove why it is the mockery of the sports world.

I haven't seen or experienced this "negative stance". From the sounds of it, it's isolated to America only because soccer's popularity doesn't show any signs of declining in Europe, South America and (I'm pretty sure) Oceania. Then again, it's a matter of personal taste - for my money, baseball is the most incredibly boring and mundane sport imaginable.

Give me a soccer match over baseball any day of the week....btw...what "much negative attitude" are you referring to?? Ahhh..so you are buying into the American media's view of the game...hmm

Also...you say, " there are so many things wrong with it that it's just not worth people's time. And this year's team helped prove why it is the mockery of the sports world."

Really??? it seems the entire world makes time for it...and just how did this years team help to prove its the mockery of the sports world???

Chewy has a point. As a whole, soccer isnt popular here. Maybe in 20 or 30 years itll gain enough popularity, but as of now its not much. He also had a good point about how the fact that our team did very badly in Germany isnt going to help soccer domestically. We need to get to a final or win the world cup before we have soccer as a popular sport here.

Eh... I'm not a big sports fan at all, but the only negative attitudes that I've seen have been from a few dumb rednecks that think American football is the only sport there is. What an idiotic stance to have, no? My favorite sport would have to be high power rifle competition, but we don't see very many people in the media touting it as the best sport ever, do we? I don't think that it's fair to label American ambivalence towards soccer as a "negative attitude". It's all about the money and there are three other sports that definitely have established themselves in America's sports economy.

Haha... sorry to the few of you that don't live here... I often forget my audience. I have no doubt about Soccer's popularitty OUTSIDE of the United States. I was purely talking about it here. And btw, baseball is about as exciting to watch on TV as golf... or paint drying. In person it's totally different as are most sports.

Hehe... I could tell and that's why I prefaced with the various sources I was pulling from. I am and appreciate all sports for a lot of reasons but Soccer is just simply one (on the Professional level) that is very tough to get into. Again, I'm not stating fact or I would be God.
