Re: Busted: Protect your rights in police encounters...

I also don't think it is fair for you to get upset because a cop pulls you over and then asks if he can search your vehicle. He is allowed to ask and you are allowed to say no. Sounds like you were both playing chess and you were able to make the last move. I hope he at least gave you a ticket though. When he pulls you out of your car and starts beating you for no reason we'll talk.

I don't recall saying I'd get upset about a cop asking to search my vehicle. I DID say I'd get upset if I felt it was completely unjustified.

Kind of like what I've been saying.

Whatever that means.

Much to your chagrin I'll bet, both the times I told an officer "no" to a search, they left because even though I had the gall to stand up for my rights, I was polite about it. Both times the officers left on good terms with me. Just because I'm not bending over backwards for the officers, doesn't mean I have to be a dick to him.

You want to piss me off: saying someone deserves a ticket because they fight for their right against unreasonable searches is one way to do it.

And that has exactly what to do with anything I've said? Unprovoked police brutality is related to searching a vehicle.... how? If we're going down that road, a dirty cop can get away with pretty much anything he wants in that situation.

A violation of a person's rights is a violation no matter what form it comes in.

In an effort to ratchet down the rhetoric a tad, from my perch it seems that the fuzz and theFenix have basically been saying the same thing, but there's a slight quibble with perceived attitude. IMO the police should be aggressive in seeking to catch bad guys but should stay within the law. Citizens should be aggressive in protecting their rights but should obey the law.

This means that an officer should ask to search your car or property if he or she has a hunch. It also means that you should deny consent, and that they should recognize that their hunch does not authorize them to press the matter. We all agree with this, right? What's the problem?

Re: Busted: Protect your rights in police encounters...

Chess reference: Chess is a game of wits. He started it and you finished it. It was a compliment to you.

Giving you a ticket: When people get pulled over and then no ticket was issued they feel they were pulled over for some nefarious reason. i.e. racial profiling etc... The ticket will justify to some that there was a reason for the stop in the first place. Admittedly it can also serve to protect the cop later on if an invalid complaint is filed. So, I was saying that I hope he gave you a ticket because that would justify the stop and hopefully help you realize he wasn't profiling or harassing you. I was not hoping that you personally received a ticket. I should have bee much more clear on that and I apologize for the misunderstanding I caused. For the most part I think tickets are a waste and should be reserved for the jerks that truly deserve them. But that is another topic. I see no problem with an officer pulling someone over with good PC and then not cutting them a ticket all the while trying to see what is in the car or how they can get in the car. Even if no ticket was issued. IMHO the vehicle code's best use is getting into the cars of people you know are dirty.

Re: Busted: Protect your rights in police encounters...

I didn't want to start an entirely new thread, but this is off topic, although it deals with the issue of cops and civil rights.

Watch this video first and see how many civil rights violations you see:

http://media.putfile.com/Shreveport-PD-01

Then watch the second video and see the rest of the story. This is also a great demonstration of why witnesses aren't always the best source of information.

http://media.putfile.com/Shreveport-PD-02

And to bring it back on topic, the moral of the story is that in order to protect your most precious of civil rights, don't point metal objects at cops in a threatening manner after leading them on a car chase, especially when they already have their guns pointed at you!

Until he stopped advancing with what they thought was a weapon. I counted at least 8 shots. This is not uncommon.

Re: Busted: Protect your rights in police encounters...

And another somewhat off topic comment:

Quote:
A woman and a man are involved in a car accident on a snowy, cold Monday morning; it's a bad one.

Both of their cars are totally demolished but amazingly neither of them are hurt. God works in Mysterious ways.

After they crawl out of their cars, the woman says, "So you're a man. That's interesting. I'm a woman. Wow, just look at our cars! There's nothing left, but we're unhurt. This must be a sign from God that we should meet and be friends and live together in peace for the rest of our days".

Flattered, the man replies, "Oh yes, I agree with you completely, this must be a sign from God!"

The woman continues, "And look at this, here's another miracle. My car is completely demolished but this bottle of wine didn't break. Surely God wants us to drink this wine and celebrate our good fortune." Then she hands the bottle to the man.

The man nods his head in agreement, opens it and drinks half the bottle and then hands it back to the woman. The woman takes the bottle and immediately corks it, and hands it back to the man. The man asks,

"Aren't you having any?"

The woman replies, "No. I think I'll just wait for the police.... "

Heh, very funny Cing. I heard a priest tell that joke at mass once, but the roles were played by a priest and rabbi instead of man and woman.

Here's a good thread in another forum:

Possible warning for language as they have no restrictions.

Things that should be common sense but aren't. Interacting with the POLICE.
