Re: Zarqawi killed

Wow, fantastic news! Obviously this won't end the violence (although it will help), but it is a major achievement in the struggle against terrorism not only in Iraq, but around the world. The Iraqi people deserve security along with their new found freedom, and this is a big step in moving towards that. As someone who has had friends killed by this SOB's organization...I hope he rots in hell....[/gets off soapbox]

Re: Zarqawi killed

Looks like New Balance will need to find a new spokesperson...

On a serious note, hopefully his death means a decrease in sectarian violence within the country. He seemed to be the one giving the biggest push supporting civil war in Iraq...

Hopefully this will make the stock market recover from the last few days. Any details on what aircraft/bomb did it?

Re: Zarqawi killed

Unfortunately, someone else will jump in his place so they can become a martor...

IMO, We need to now find and kill Old Bin, make sure Saddam is found guilty and executed, then get the hell out of there... We took out the main players, time for the Iraq citizens to pay there dues, and start standing on there own two feet...

Definitely a plus for now.

Just found this on CNN's website, although it doesn't really tell you anything:

Quote:
Although details of the attack remain elusive, sources at the Pentagon said that a U.S. military aircraft dropped two 500-pound bombs on a safe house with al-Zarqawi inside.
Update: The AP identifies the aircraft as F-16's.

Quote:
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - U.S. military shows video of F-16's
dropping two 500-pound bombs that killed Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.
In addition, Fox News has said they were "precision guided" bombs in two separate airstrikes. So we could assume it was a couple of GBU-12's that hit the target, delivered from F-16's.

One down, about 10,000 more to go who are ready to take his place.

Re: Zarqawi killed

I have heard several analyses that suggest that Zarqawi's importance is a convenient fiction for all parties involved. For the coalition forces he has been a clear villain for morale and domestic political purposes, for the Iraqi government he has distracted from the fractious and corrupt groups waging a secular war within the country, and for the insurgents he has been both a rallying point and a distraction from the Baathists and some of the lesser known groups. He wasn't even closely allied with other global AQ groups and had several fallings out with them.

It's good that we got the bastard, but it will be interesting to see how it plays out among the Iraqis. There are already reports of rival insurgent groups duking it out with Zarqawi's forces in Fallujah.

Re: Zarqawi killed

Even if this is just a fictitious morale booster as you suggest it is, it's a big one. Something tells me if we lost one of our top Generals you would find it hard not to conclude it as a devastating blow however.

Zarqawi is unquestionably responsible for the deaths of innocent Iraqi's and many US Soldiers. May he rot in hell.....slowly.

Yes good point, the proof will be in what transpires in the next few weeks/months.

Very good to hear though, and even better seven of his aides were with him.

At the very least, it should slow down the activity for a bit while they re-group.

Job well done boys (and girls ) keep up the great work !

Re: Zarqawi killed

Mission Accomplished!

Regardless of his actual importance, proving that you can take out individual leaders, no matter how well hidden, will weaken the organization of these groups. Strong leaders are not suicidal at all, in spite of all of the talk of martyrdom and such. They only use that to fool their underlings into offing themselves for the cause. Was Saddam standing tall atop one of his palaces in Baghdad, daring the US troops to come in there? I think not. He was hiding in a hole.

I was watching some commentary on this, I think on MSNBC. The analyst was saying that perhaps some special operations group had the building painted, which really isn't that big of a deal. What is a big deal is that the operators could figure out where this guy was, get in to place, and get the munitions on target, without him getting spooked and moving. They said that it seems likely that his personal security had been degrading and that a lot of the fighters he brought in at the start of the war were gone and he had to resort to locals. It was said that it was a high-ranking Iraqi source within his organization had turned him in, which kinda enforces this. Breaking down his security was a long, drawn out process.

CNN mentioned a suicide bombing that killed 13 people just a couple hours after the announcement.
