Re: Olbermann spanks O'Reilly, and other issues.
Olberman in recent years has switched from color commentary on news items to being basically a media watchdog. Similar to the Daily Show in that he trades in fact checks and counters to absurd ramblings from the right-wing press. He has slammed politicians and spokespeople from both parties, but as a commenter you tend to focus on the loudest and the dumbest examples, which frequently draws him to the likes of O'Reilly, Rush, and Coulter. They are the dominant loudmouths and so get the most attention.
I wish I could find the quote - at one point Olberman said that he never considered himself particularly liberal or politically active, but his recent response to what he considers lunacy coming from other broadcasters has kind of dropped him into that niche. Frankly, I'm glad that there is an established, respected voice keeping very public tabs on the stupid and the disingenuous. If only there were more.

Re: Olbermann spanks O'Reilly, and other issues.
I was under the impression it was about speech patterns and rhetoric. I think Olberman does a good job when it comes to clarity and driving his point home, but it's just a pointless war of words between two egomaniacal national television personalities.
I will say it's damn tough to actually speak that way without a teleprompter. Or rehearsing. Both of which Olbermann had there, no doubt. But if you practice speaking like that enough, it'll start to come naturally. |

Dumb? Stupid?

In any case, it's interesting how fast some people who claim to be relentlessly logical and scrupulously attentive to facts spew "idiot" and "stupid" to describe highly-educated people with whom they disagree. Is this thread about language or blowhards? I dunno. I'm fixin to bail 'cause I need to head yonder to Houston. Y'all take care. |

Re: Olbermann spanks O'Reilly, and other issues.
One's education does not excuse one from being factually wrong. People are suddenly quick to pull out O'Reilly and Coulter's degrees when they are under fire for saying something dumb. But the rest of the time? Well, as we all know, higher education is a hotbed of liberalism and anti-American hatemongers. Wealthy elitist northeasterners are not to be trusted.
