Re: Computer Ownership

I don't mind anyone using my computer as long as I know about it(to all you hackers.....). When I've set up my computer the way I like it ,I create a Ghost image of it. So if something unfortunate should happen all I need to do is whip up that external imagedrive and restore......

The ones of you guys that don't like your GF/Wife using your computer, is it the same way with your car?

Not for me. There are only a couple of settings that can be changed in a car (mirror, seat, radio station, A/C, etc...) and none of them really affect the way a car drives. My PC has lots of settings that can be change, many of which will affect my PC's performance.

Re: Computer Ownership

No one is allowed to touch my machine. I have the same settings peccadillos mentioned above, and I also have a thing about keeping it clean: both hardware (no fingerprinted flatpanels and sticky keyboards) and software (clean, organized desktop and file structure).

My kids have a machine I made for them, with old hardware components (CRT, keyboard, mouse) that they can get as sticky/greasy/dirty/disgusting as they want.

My wife also has a machine I made for her, so she can clutter up the desktop with 1,000 icons that she never sorts or throws away. When I use her machine I run firefox so I don't have to deal with her 3 scrolling pages of bookmarks. It's odd that I hate virtual clutter more than I hate physical clutter.

I keep their machines up to date with software patches and run defrag/Fdisk once in a while when they're not looking. But no one but me touches my machine.

Re: Computer Ownership

Every person in my house has their own computer (I have two). When we were younger and still living in our own house, there was only enough room for one family computer, and once my sister and I got into the internet, it was constantly in use.

When we moved, my parents had given me the older computer and bought their own. So my computer was the kids' computer and theirs was untouchable. After a period of time, they gave me the newer computer, my sister got the older computer, and they bought a better one. To this day, only one of the computers (of the five we have in the house) is from that original set of three, and that's my parents' PC. I built my own a couple years ago, and after my brother downloaded a very nasty trojan on my sister's computer, she got a new one, and he got his own to mess up. I recently got a laptop for graduation. No one touches another person's computer, and it seems to work very well for the five of us.

The thing is she doesnt do anything that really all that intensive its email and those trial games you can download off of MSN. She Just doesnt understand its the one thing in my life i have control and organization over. darn girls

Just tell her that you don't want anything (trial games included) downloaded onto your computer for fear of compromising the integrity of the system. You know, viruses and the like.

Y'know Trooper, you could just explain to her what you told us. Contrary to popular belief, women can be logical and understand that you would just prefer if your computer stayed your computer solely. Perhaps she uses your computer as a way to be closer to you. Are your pcs in different rooms, or does she only want to use your computer while you are on it?

Re: Computer Ownership

My gf and I only have one PC set up in our house (mine), which means we both use it. I don't like other people using my PC because I have it set up just how I want it, and I notice every little change. I have some pretty strict rules for her as far as using the PC, but she is pretty tech saavy so I'm not worried about her DL'ing viruses, etc... Sometimes though she gets pissed when I'm watching her surf the web or something because I'm like, "Just press CTRL-V to paste, you don't have to right click!!". I can't help it though. When it comes to PC habits, everyone has their own way of doing things I guess.

Re: Computer Ownership

This isnt just happening now and it doesnt just include her. In college my roommates would use it cuase it was better and faster, they all had PCs or laptops to use.

And i have tried to explain that to her, i have created an account on my PC for her and she now knows to log into that when she uses it

Re: Computer Ownership

My parents wouldnt know how to change any of my settings because theyre computer stupid. I just made an XP account for them and taught them how to double click the little outlook icon so they can check their email. Occasionally they try to surf the internet, but the search engines are apparently very confusing. Its kind of like watching a monkey try to use a computer.

Groovy. No I'm just saying that normal, everyday "discussions" can become extremely hazardous for the next 3 months or so. Gets better after that, or you get wiser. Something mellows out.

Re: Computer Ownership

I solved this by giving my wife the pretty computer. Wireless keyboard/mouse, nice lcd monitor and good looking case with the pretty light.

But I have the machine. It is ugly as ugly gets but is much more powerful than the one in the living room.

Re: Computer Ownership

I think we've always had multiple computers. There was a time when we hadn't been married very long.. she got sick of my resetting the system from scratch every few months.. eventually I set her up with a Shuttle XPC built-up and customized. She shares it with our son now - but he'll have his own in a few months I think.

As for mine - it's tweaked out and set to high screen resolutions.. she complains she can't read anything on it - so she doesn't use it.. but it is no problem for her to jump on it for a recipe or something, whenever.. there isn't much she can change that I can't change back in a few seconds.

Re: Computer Ownership

I share my PC with my wife, we use separate accounts so that bookmarks and settings don't get mixed up. Then again, she's a good user and doesn't install junk. If she did, we might have a problem. So far though, no problems. When the kids grow up though, I'm not sharing with them.
