According to my grandpa (Late 70's and has never touched a computer) the internet was created by professor's around the world to limit the use of plagerism, copyright infringment, and help spread new idea's on new subjects... Once the students figured that out, they stole the idea, and improved apon it, giving us what we've got now, Internet 1. After a while, the professor's got upset, and decided to create another internet... Now, there's two internets, and the mass public only has the right and ability to use the first internet... I WANT IN ON THE SECOND!
lol, laugh it up with me... Thought i'd share the bit of information with you... Now you know the truth... lol

Re: I want in on the second internet.
Both Internets started with a noble cause. We've seen what has happened to Internet v1.0. I'm curious to see where Internet 2.0 ends up in 15 years time. We'll probably have three Internets by then.

Yeah, the internet started out as ARPANET, which was an experiment in communications. They were trying to create a communications system that couldn't be knocked out by a bomb (or five bombs, or five hundred bombs). The spiderweb that is now the internet is the result of that experiment. In it's youth, however, military and research installations made up the entire network. I think that the Internet2 is for scholastic use only. Clogging it up with pirated movies and stolen mp3s is NOT a good idea...

Re: I want in on the second internet.
Very good point bringing up ARPANET. The history of the Internet very much involves the US government - they wanted an unbreakable, self-healing communication network. We also owe as much gratitude to Tim Berners-Lee, the primary inventor of the world-wide web.
I must point out that Internet2 has plenty of filesharing and porn on it too, just like the 'regular' Internet. That's because colleges are hotbeds for that type of traffic, so it's inevitable that if your school peers with Internet2, you've got tons of illegal stuff flying around. Connect two schools with a wire and you'll get filesharing. Anyway wikipedia has a good definition of what Internet2 is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet2. |

Re: I want in on the second internet.
"Clogging it up" with tons of traffic is a Good Thing: The robustness of the current design is precisely because it was born in fire, constantly under assault with new protocols to test. Unlike the bureacratically-designed "ideal" OSI model, TCP/IP grew by evolution, with real world testing experience. That's why you don't see an actual OSI "stack" on today's networks.
BTW, does anyone remember when the IMP's were deployed to create the first backbone? It was the same week as the first moon walk. July 1969 was an important month in history. I remember this 8-year-old glued to the TV set as Armstrong stepped down into another planet's dust, blissfully unaware that a quarter of a million miles away from that event, my future occupation was being born.
