The sandbox has provided an amazingly accessible arena in which the members manage to twist and deform a poster's message into simplifications implying all sorts of ignorance and bigotry in the name of discussion. I amazed daily by your literary malleability.

I think you are making the assumption that the US is the only place that could operate on them. I don't think the US should foot that bill or the taxpayers of California. Look, if that Hospital wants to cut into their profits, then I support their charity. Performing the surgery and then billing the State of California and forcing taxpayers to cover their expenses is absurd.

The twins are Mexican citizens too. By that logic, why wasn't that operation performed in Mexico. I don't see why the taxpayers of California should eat that bill. Ultimately we are arguing two different things. My objection to this ends when the Hospital eats the bill, not the taxpayers.

And that's fine. They can pass that cost onto other people as it makes that hospital less competitive. If that cost makes them prohibitively more expensive that their patients now go somewhere else, that allows the hospital to weigh out whether that was the right decision. I prefer that over forcing that cost onto taxpayers.

I understand your point, but I think the most likely result is that we all pay higher insurance and doctor bills as costs like this are spread over the whole health care system.

But thats sadly true...the middle class could never hope to afford medical procedures of this magnitude. The only way to do this is to be so poor no one even asks you to help pay.
