Re: Allow me please: RIP
I take stories like these to heart with my brother and best friend both being officers. I both love and am terrified to hear of their encounters.

Re: Allow me please: RIP
We just had an officer killed in the line of Duty here in PHX. He wasn't shot just a bad accident and he was on his patrol motorcycle. It's always sad to see an officer loose his life in the line of duty. I also have friends that are officers and some of the stories they have told are pretty scary. RIP

Re: Allow me please: RIP
Yesterday (Tuesday) I went to the funeral of Matt.
Of course any type of death or funeral is saddening, but if you've never seen a cops funeral that was killed in the line of duty, it's a beautiful event to behold. There was approx. 5,000 officers there, at least 3000 police cars, and about 1000 of those were K9 vehicles, (most, including me, brought our dogs). It was so big that it took from 10 AM to 6 PM just to have the service, get the procession to the funeral site, and final burial. The church was the biggest church I've seen in my life, 3 levels, more like an opera theater, and it wasn't big enough, a nearby gym hosted 500 plus more, and another large room 500 plus more, and still not everyone could get it. the service had closed circuit TV for all to see. The procession was, my estimation, about 5 miles long... and for the first time (and anyone from the Lakeland, Florida area, I thank you), every road was completely closed for the 12 mile ride, all the businesses had flags at half staff, and thousand and thousands of citizens lined the roads with flags, signs of support and love, salutes, and hands over the heart... it was truly a moving experience to see the citizens support us police like that, after 20 plus years in law enforcement I was seriously having my doughts that what we do in general is appreciated. There was about 2 dozen news vans, and 7 news helicopters filming above, but oddly enough I can't find any pics or videos using google any where. (would be a sight to see from high above.) This is the biggest funeral I've ever seen in my life, incredibly sad, but incredibly beutiful... and when I go in to work today, I have a feeling because of the support I observed from our citizens, work will be a joy again, and I will remember what it's all about when dealing with people. Re: Allow me please: RIP
My heart goes out to the families and friends of the fallen officers. It's never an easy thing to hear about something like this. These people are doing what they need to do to keep our lives safe and it's a God-awful tragedy when they pay the ultimate price for it.
An incident happened out here not too long ago where three police officers were gunned down. The sadness and anger was unanimous all over... the news coverage was sub-par compared to other asinine stories, but the effect, regardless of the news stations, was huge. We care. R.I.P.

Re: Allow me please: RIP
Leaving work yesterday was certainly interesting. Traffic was effectively stopped all over town.
Going a different route which didn't cross streets with the funeral procession, we were able to see it above from the causeway. I have NEVER seen that many police cars on one road, all with their lights on. Red and blue lights could be seen for MILES.

Re: Allow me please: RIP
Heres the local paper with tons of pics of the funeral and service.
Also the dispatch tape of the incident, very long. and the journal of the cop killer. Just in case anyone is intrested. http://www.lakelandledger.com/apps/pbcs.dll/frontpage Last edited by Magnum50; 10-08-2006 at 02:41 AM. Reason: forgot link |
