Re: Are you agist?!
I think that the law as described is a bit overboard in the PC department, but I'm on board with the non-discrimination based on age. I've had this kind of discussion in other topics, but let's look at the lower end of discrimination: Instead of saying that someone can't vote until they're 18, let's say that nobody can vote until they've taken a civics class. Instead of having a drinking age of 21, let's allow anyone to drink once they've passed a test on the dangers of drugs, drinking, impairment and addiction. And, instead of an age of consent, let's require people pass a sex education class and pyschological exam. I'd be cool with those changes. Right now, our laws have established numerical age limitations based on social norms. Most kids mature enough to handle sex or voting or drinking at the age that it becomes legal. However, that's a bell curve. There are significant numbers of kids that are mature enough to handle those things before they reach that magic age, and there are significant numbers that really shouldn't be participating in those activities for years after they get that numer of candles on their birthday cake.
On the other end, it's the same way. I know that my grandfather is better qualified to be a firefighter than some of the 25 year olds that I see on the street. He can at least carry his own weight up 5 flights of stairs at a decent jog, which is more than I can say for too many people these days... But making it illegal to mention age? Political correctness does NOT help the situation...

These types of rules are totally sensless. I hate to think about how things will be once I finish college and have to be a part of this type of workplace.

Re: Are you agist?!
First they take away the firm, open palm "attagirl" slap on the butt at the office, now this?!
How will they show From Russia With Love now? Will they beep out the parts where the bad guy says "old man"? |

Re: Are you agist?!
Cing - I absolutely agree, and this is what is most annoying. In order to not discriminate against something all the laws try to make it act like it does not exist. Ohhh don't mention age cos that makes you a bigot. Ridiculous. I think we can only truly get rid of discrimination when we are able to freely talk about it and embrace it.
However the answer is clear. Birthdays must be banned. That way none of us will get older.
