Re: Rumsfeld stepping down
Quote:
In his press conference yesterday there was another lie that I caught that I havent seen mentioned. Bush says in reference to Rumsfeld's reseignation in conjunction with the election results, THE PRESIDENT: I had been talking with Don Rumsfeld over a period of time about fresh perspective. He likes to call it fresh eyes. He, himself, understands that Iraq is not working well enough, fast enough. And he and I are constantly assessing. And I'm assessing, as well, all the time, by myself, about, do we have the right people in the right place, or do we -- got the right strategy? As you know, we're constantly changing tactics. And that requires constant assessment. And so he and I both agreed in our meeting yesterday that it was appropriate that I accept his resignation. And so the decision was made -- actually, I thought we were going to do fine yesterday. Shows what I know. But I thought we were going to be fine in the election. My point to you is, is that, win or lose, Bob Gates was going to become the nominee. and four questions later he repeatedly denies any pre-planned ideas of Rumsfeld being removed/resigning: Q Mr. President, thank you. Can I just start by asking you to clarify, sir, if, in your meeting with Steve and Terry and Dick, did you know at that point -- THE PRESIDENT: I did not. Q -- you would be making a change on Secretary Rumsfeld? THE PRESIDENT: No, I did not. And the reason I didn't know is because I hadn't visited with his replacement -- potential replacement. Q But you knew he would be leaving, just not who would replace him? THE PRESIDENT: No, I didn't know that at the time. I hadn't visited with Bob Gates. I told you I visited with him last Sunday in Crawford. You can't replace somebody until you know you got somebody to replace him with. And finally, I hadn't had my last conversation with Secretary Rumsfeld, which I had yesterday. So he knew that gates would be nominated yet he still adamently denies and previous knowledge that Rumsfeld would be resigning/removed? Does this confuse anyone else here? The questions and answers I pasted in italics above were copied directly from the whitehouse.gov transcripts of his speech by the way which can be found here http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/relea...0061108-2.html Bottom line is that Rumsfeld should have been removed long ago. Bush knows it and the rest of the world knows it. Chaney got his best friend the position and then fought like hell to keep him there regardless of how badly he failed. Even Laura Bush wanted him removed. The president was not given a choice, this is the only reason the decision was made. Its not for a "fresh prospective" its because the outcome of the elections made it very clear that it needed to be done and that Chaney could not shelter his b/f/f any longer. Rummy has shown a level of inhumane behavior and incompetance since the beginning, such as: **Rumsfeld's statement regarding post-invasion looting, "stuff happens" and After the overthrow of Saddam Hussein in April 2003, the defense secretary tried to explain the looting that went on afterward: "Freedom's untidy, and free people are free to commit crimes and make mistakes and do bad things." **Rumsfeld bears direct responsibility for the torture and abuse of detainees in U.S. military custody, the American Civil Liberties Union and Human Rights First charged him in March in the first federal court lawsuit to name a top U.S. official in the ongoing torture scandal in Iraq and Afghanistan that has tarnished America’s reputation. **On a soldier's complaint about the inferior military equipment in Iraq, Rumsfeld said memorably, "You go to war with the army you have." **On July 22, 2002, Rumsfeld initialed a directive to Air Force Gen. Richard Myers, then-chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff, on how to execute missions dealing with terrorists. One excerpt from the memo read: "The objective should be to capture terrorists for interrogation, or if necessary, to kill them, not simply to arrest them in (a) law enforcement exercise." Rummy has been a boil on the buttocks of the United States since he was appointed. Bush is fully responsible for this fact. Rummy has attempted to "resign" twice and Bush refused to accept his resignation. Maybe this was due to some influence on Chaney's part but regardless, it was Bush's ultimate decision. He's gone now, but I fear that the damage has been done and the whole of the United States suffers the consequences because the entire world now has a jaded view of us. I anxiously await the 2008 elections... Bush needs to be gone!
