Re: Predictions for the next two years?

You need a supermajority to pass legislation in the Senate - 60 votes. Still a do-nothing Congress, but the Dems can do as many investigations as they like given their control of both houses. The 51 seat majority in the Senate will permit them to control most of the comittees, but the Republicans can block any legislation they want with just 41 of their 50 votes.

Points to Tybalt for the correction.

Well, I've just prediction-spammed the whole waterfront. I'm sure something I've said is gonna come true. And when it does, that will be proof of my own prescience.

Re: Predictions for the next two years?

Although I like the fact that the legislature is going to be controlled by a party other than the one in the White House, my biggest fear is that Congress will pass some silly gun control laws.

I'll also predict that illegal immigration and border security issues are put WAY on the back burner.

Yah thats a definite especially since they want to raise the federal minimum wage.

Re: Predictions for the next two years?

Yeah, I think the major priorities of the 110th will start off with "pocketbook" issues. Minimum wage (which is due for SOME kind of overhaul at this point), health care, education costs.

As far as guns go, the Dems have too tenuous a hold on congress to hand the Republicans a fresh wedge at this point. Unless some Democrat goes off the reservation and brings it up, I don't think gun control will make it to the forefront for a few years. If they win the White House and retain congress in 2008 expect a revival of gun control.

Re: Predictions for the next two years?

My crystal ball says no gun control for the next two years as well. Unless, as I saw on the Conan O'Brian show last night, Pelosi gets the presidency. She's now third in line.

Re: Predictions for the next two years?

I'd want to differentiate between 'real' gun control laws and the 'other' ones that politicians pass which don't really do anything. The latter is always on the table, regardless of who's in charge.

President Clinton's "Assault Weapons Ban" didn't really do anything but piss off gun enthusiasts. It banned only cosmetic features of a gun. But that's the sort of thing I'm talking about. A Dem Congress will try to boil the gun control frog slower this time, but I think they'll start applying the heat before 2008.

Re: Predictions for the next two years?

Yeah, I'd put the assault weap ban in the 'real' category, because I want my 30 round mags. And I want 'em new. Of course, I'm in Cali so I can't have it anyways.

But if they passed... I don't know... a $5 gun tax? Or a resolution decrying gun violence?

I'd raise hell over a $5 gun tax, but I wouldn't have a problem with a resolution on gun violence.

Re: Predictions for the next two years?

Okay... no laws which ban the sale of or production of firearms, ammunition, or equipment, and no taxes?

I don't know if I want to take that bet

I disagree with both. I think that gun control is so far on the back burner as to fall behind the stove (unless another disruptive event like columbine comes along).

As for immigration, Bush had some real conflicts within the party that was preventing solid immigration reform legislation. With most of those republicans now lamed, and the freshmen dems who are taking their place extremely vulnerable (and more centrist than dems typically are) I expect that there will be a lot of good discussion and maybe action on immigration reform.

I think the democrats are going to have a hard time keeping their party voting by the lines. A lot of the new democrats are not nearly as liberal as Pelosi--they wouldn't have been elected if they were, and they wont be reelected if they are.

That would be interesting, but I think we'll see them fall into place...
