Recall that what made it a secular "modern" nation was a nationalist militaristic autocracy led by our old buddy Saddam. The result of deposing him is the rise of sectarian authority and tribal loyalties - the dissolution of the very concept of a state. People also miss the part that before Saddam, Iraq was a fractured tribal land with arbitrarily defined borders.
