Re: Another great moment in higher education.

International students pay a lot more at canadian universities. And, getting scholarships and grants from the school or government appear to be impossible or very hard.

Re: Another great moment in higher education.

I recently got accepted to MIT and UF but i turned down the MIT route for financial reasons. And I want to have fun in college. Not be a psycho-hardcore engineering student with no life. Party on!!! =]

Murphy: So what do you think?
Connor: I'm strangely comfortable with it.

It's quite cool that you can say you turned down MIT. I think ScratchMonkey went there too.

Re: Another great moment in higher education.

UF isn't a bad school, but do you think that the money you save now will make up the difference in your earning power between a BS from MIT and one from UF over your working lifetime? It's a calculated risk.

I have a number of friends at MIT, and it's not that they don't have any life. There are parties, and Boston is a great city. Even those that don't party have fun. After all, partying isn't the only way to have fun.

I'm not saying this to be a downer, but in the end I think most people realize that school is for studying hard and not partying hard. I think a lot of people regret, including me, not taking full advantage of the opportunity college affords one's education and partying too much instead.

[edit] Oh, and the opportunities at MIT will be better than those at UF. I don't place much value in the USNews ranking of schools, but what opportunities you get depends partially on you but also on what professors you have access to. And, although professors are generally high quality at all major American schools, there really is a difference between the top schools and the nontop schools.

Re: Another great moment in higher education.

I have recently met a group of people who all have graduate degrees from MIT. They have continued their "tradition" of hosting regular weekly orgies.

Just saying.

Re: Another great moment in higher education.

Switchcraft, if you ever decide to take a philosophy class at Columbia, take one with Christia Mercer, Philip Kitcher, or Achille Varzi.

Mercer was telling me about some philosophy of sex class that she was co-teaching with someone else. Although I'm usually not interested in feminist philosophy to the slightest, she made the course sound pretty cool--and she's definently a cool person.

I have not yet met Kitcher, but he's probably the biggest metaphysician at Columbia.

And, Varzi is just awesome. We had him here for a talk a few semesters ago and found out that he was just an incredible story teller at dinner. Plus he works on cool questions like, "do holes and shadows exist, and if so what are their natures?"
