Since when did the privilage of being able to keep the cannon become their right? Also what happened to the older cannon? Did that one blow somebody else's leg off? I don't care if the cannon was made by a master craftsmen and made out of tungsten. Cannons won't last. In fact I believe its the fault of the school board for being so short sighted and narrow minded. The school basically got away with tenure, which doesn't cut it.

Tradition be damned, get a kick a** stereo system and play a recording, nobody will know the difference (note: sarcasm).

It doesn't appear that the mayor is questioning the validity of the reports. Rather, he's doing some damage control, stating--probably accurately--that it's a small minority of the town's population that acted this way.

Do you think the forwarded criminal charges will amount to anything?

I've dealt with a lot of "small-town America" in Texas while working at my old job. I've met some truely great people and some very biased ones as well. The small-town mentality can create some truely messed-up people. If they couldn't even be bothered to stop the game after such a horrific incident, it speaks poorly for them. I'm arguing scale here, but they could have at least waited until he was dragged off the field before resuming play.

Depends. Is the Judge going to show up to court in a high school letter jacket? My interaction with small-town police and judges taints my objectivity, but I'll reserve any comment until there's more information.

That said, the charges do have merit if the threats were actually made.

Re: Boy hurt by cannon blast feels twice wounded

Hm. Interesting. Would those be assault charges or some other kind?

No. I'm sketchy on this, but there's a couple of violations they could be charged with.

The actual wording of the law against death threats escapes me. But it's not nearly as serious (most articles I've read have jail-times of around 6 months or so), as something like attempted murder or conspiracy to commit murder. I'm not even sure if it's a felony or not. I would think it at least classifies as a class A or B misdeameanor. Also, these charges tend to vary by state.

Proving attempted murder would be impossible and conspiracy requires actual formations of plans to commit the murder. Like if the person making the death threat has contacted people saying he was going to do it in the near future or hired someone to do it. I'm not sure though if single violators are charged with this.

Conspiracy would apply, say, if witnesses claimed he was going to round up some guys and beat someone to death with baseball bats. Cops bust in, find a bunch of bats and a note with the victims address on it.

This is really why I'm interested in WHO made these threats. High school kids tend to do and say stupid things without consideration of the consequences. A threat like that from a parent would weight more.

A Snohomish woman was charged Friday with telephone harassment for allegedly making threats against Brett Karch, a teenager who was injured in a cannon accident during a homecoming football game in October.

The Everett prosecutor's office filed the misdemeanor charge against Dana Lynne Snyder, 41. The incident allegedly occurred Oct. 20 while Karch was still hospitalized with a severe leg injury.
