Re: Most challenging video game moments

The entire game of Contra...I dont think I know a single player that beat the game without using the infamous cheat.

Is that a Zork reference? I played all 3 and never finished any of them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zork

This guy appears to have beaten the Contra without dying. It doesn't look like he used any cheats, but maybe he used some computer assisted tools-slow motion or something. But, I don't know.

Re: Most challenging video game moments

My GF and I have been playing through Mario 3 the last few days and damn... the Level 7 airship has got to be the most frustrating, unenjoyable level I have ever played. I can't remember ever being so pissed off at a video game. I don't know how I had the patience for it as a kid!

Re: Most challenging video game moments

Agreed the Mario 3 last airship was tough but it was doable. So was Contra without the cheating but it took a lot of work.

I'd really have to agree that Battletoads NES was the most difficult game I've ever played.

Re: Most challenging video game moments

Mario 3 had several pretty tough levels. My personal least favorite was the ice level with the exit in the ceiling, that was almost impossible to reach unless you used the infinite flight item.

Actually, NES games in general were pretty tough. I only ever beat maybe half the ones I owned. Like Top Gun 2--I never even finished the 2nd mission. Always crashing into the blasted trees.

What I'm trying to think of is a game that was extremely hard, but I did beat eventually. So far the best I've got is X-Com, which was hard not so much because of the game design, but because my copy tended to crash if I tried to save the game during a battle. It was a lot of work to beat X-Com without battle saving, and I was amazed at how easy the game seemed when I later installed it on a better computer that didn't crash.

Re: Most challenging video game moments

I'm surprised that nobody mentioned the final level in the original Driver, even though its not as hard as some of these. The reason I bring it up is that it is the only part of a video game that has been that hard and yet remained fun and not frustrating, that I know of at least.

I played Zork on a VAX as well. Or whatever it's "clone" name was. I was also a big Moria fan back in those days too!

Re: Most challenging video game moments

Just want to resurrect this thread for one addition that most people forgot to mention...

The water temple for Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and now, Twilight Princess.

Is it just me, or do the recent Zelda games like to have really hard Water Temples? Oy.
