Myst was quite entertaining, and some of the puzzles were challenging, but I wouldn't say that it was hard overall to finish.

You're saying you finished it?

I remember going to this underground chamber thru that hollowed out tree, but couldn't solve the puzzle down there :/

Re: Most challenging video game moments

There were a lot of tricky puzzles in Myst...but ultimately, all of them were perfectly logical and could be solved with a little effort.

The only thing that made it really hard was when we first installed it it had some bugs, and some of the helpful graphics didn't play correctly. When you don't get to see the clues, that makes a puzzle game a lot harder.

At the end though, you find out all you really need to know to beat the game is a single number. Once you know that number, the game is yours.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the NES, the first one, was really hard, I never even got halfway through the game.

Heck yeah, and I don't remember thinking it was very difficult, either. It took me weeks, just because I didn't play it very often, but I remember finishing it and being disappointed in it. The graphics were spectacular, but that's the only thing it had going for it...

agreed. Very very hard.

It is interesting how games are made today.

Beat it in a matter of hours and throw some money down for the next one.

What were they thinking back then? They mist out on tons of money.

I can tell you exactly what they were thinking back then: Most of those games were designed for Arcades. In the arcades, harder game = more quarters spent on continues. It was just a side-effect that the console ports became almost impossible to beat once you didn't have access to infinite continues anymore.

Operation Thunderbolt in the arcade... trying to take out the last guy that is holding the planes pilot hostage and the only thing showing is his head (and anyone who has played this game knows what happens when you shoot the pilot!).

You know, I think you sold me on that.

Back then the money the business made was nothing compared to todays sales. So i guess more art and a little lag from porting them from coins to single bulk purchase was a factor.

But man, games for the most part are easy now.

Re: Most challenging video game moments

I love Metal Slug, it's a shame it hasn't had much of an import scene. I can't wait to pick up a copy of the complete anthology (1-5, alas they aren't including the latest 6 just released :P) for the PSP. Finally a good title for the machine

Metal slug is excruciatingly hard, I remember going into arcades with like 5 dollars in quarters and not being able to make it past the third level.

I wish arcade style games would give you an infinite amount of "continues" They could easily punish the player by halving the score in half, just like they did with Super Smash Bros.

I loved that game! I never got through it either. I'm going to try it again, though, because now you can purchase it on the Wii Virtual Console!

And good news Sirusblk...The Metal Slug Anthology (which is 1-5 + X) is also available for the Wii, so you can play it on your TV too. I think it's only 29 or 39 bucks. A worthy purchase.

Everyone is right though. Games back then used to be WAY WAY harder. And it wasn't just from my childhood perspective either. I sometimes break out my old NES and the games are even harder to me. I don't know how the heck I got to the final level in Battletoads when I was a kid!?! I can't even get past that dang hovercycle level now.

Totally, when I watched the footage on YouTube, I had forgotten how hard it was. One needed to actually learn the course and keep dialing in every move and change in speed.
____

I went back and played Ninja Gaiden at the first of the year.
I had forgotten that getting the power up that makes you jump and spin your sword in circles is the key. The trick is getting to the boss and keeping good health/magic and not lossing the power up.

On N.G. II. Things were tough, but using the phantom (orange) player is your go to guy.

_________

BTW, I was able to get all Golds on the lincence test on G.T. III. However, with G.T. IV, I really, really strugled on getting gold just half way through all the test. I stopped playing the game like two years ago. IMO, I thought the difficultly was were it needed to be in G.T. III.
