Re: Why DRM Won't Ever Work...
An other problem that DRM faces - luckily - is leakage of information. Say they can secure a key well enough so that no one can find it, odds are someone from within the firm will crack it for his own use or something and pass it to a friend and then it's out. The human factor may be the weakest link of all in the end.
Consider all those preview "screeners" (I believe they call them that) that are available for download over torrents. All of these are leaked.

Re: Why DRM Won't Ever Work...
I saw an interesting article this morning on the topic:
Proposed Amendment Would Ban All DVD Copying from PC Magazine:
Looks like they are at it again! Apparently they have tried to pass this before but were unsuccessfull. There are some bog boys behind it though: Warner Bros., Walt Disney Studios, Intel, HP, Toshiba, Pioneer.A proposed amendment to the current copy protection license governing DVDs would completely ban all DVD backups, and prevent DVD playback without the DVD disk being present inside the drive.
The proposed amendment was made public in a letter sent by Michael Malcolm, the chief executive of Kaleidescape, a DVD jukebox company which successfully defeated a suit by the DVD Copy Control Association (DVD CCA) this past March. The proposed amendment is scheduled for a vote on Wednesday, according to Malcolm....
...The proposed amendment would apparently add hardware restrictions to prevent DVD data from being descrambled and then copied...
...Managed copies would either transfer the CSS (Contents Scrambling System) key to the recordable DVD, which would require an additional CSS "replicator" license, or else use what is called "pre-keyed" media, which would include the CSS key already as part of the disc structure...
Ugh! I can't tell you how usefull DVD backups have been for me. I have an eight and five year old who have been handling DVDs for years. They have rendered unplayable/lost at least a dozen of them. Several of our movies have been saved only because I backed them up. This could be a very frustrating development!LoyalGuard

Goodbye Alcohol and Daemon Tools. The proposed amendment would also prohibit software manufacturers to create "virtual drives," running a DVD image from a hard drive. The previous Kaleidescape case touched upon the company's use of ripping a DVD to a large internal hard drive, and playing back the movie on demand without the need for a physical disk to be inserted into the drive.Dude, seriously, WHAT handkerchief?
