Re: US Economic Policy - Made in China

I think you have them backwards, leejo.

effect:
5 : power to bring about a result : INFLUENCE <the content itself of television...is therefore less important than its effect>

affect:
1 obsolete : FEELING, AFFECTION
2 : the conscious subjective aspect of an emotion considered apart from bodily changes; also : a set of observable manifestations of a subjectively experienced emotion <patients...showed perfectly normal reactions and affects -- Oliver Sacks>

Re: US Economic Policy - Made in China

Did you want to say that government spending makes the economy happen or did you want to say that government spending influences the economy? If the first, then 'effect' was correct. If the latter, then you should have used 'affect'.

Re: US Economic Policy - Made in China

This is the WORST DAY OF MY LIFE BECAUSE OF THIS!!!!

Wait, I still don't get it though... the M-W definition for affect says nothing about influence, but the M-W definition for effect does.

Thats because you pulled "Affect: 1: noun" Instead of "Affect: 3: Transitive Verb". As we use it today, Affect is usually a verb.

"There" would indicate that you are speaking of a place. I suppose it is safe to assume that you mean "They're", or "They are" crazy like that.

The effect of this thread hijacking is that many people will not be intellectually affected by discussion of the topic of monetary policy...

Yeah, we pretty much channel surfed past Friedman and went straight to the GGW infomercial.

Largely put to rest would indicate that people know it and believe it. That is not the case. In fact government largesse is a solid plank in the democratic party platform, and both parties contribute to Congress' negative fiscal discipline.

I'm not a doom and gloomer, but Tytler has a heck of a point here.

China's Economy 40% Smaller Than Previously Thought
