Oh, damn you for being right, and me for being lazy (though France comes pretty close to that description).

More seriously, then: most of the food I buy is packaged for conservation (cans, UHT milk, etc.). I also have an assortment of tools owing to the fact that I play wargames (you wouldn't believe some of the things that wargamers need). Finally, I live in a rural area at the top of a hill, with no surrounding forests and far enough away from the sea. It'd probably take a day for us to even realise a natural disaster had happened.

Re: Personal contingency plan

Living in France, and or being French, in my mind would constitute a disasterous emergency.

One of the things I like about having a well is not worrying about water supply. I am working on setting up a pump made out of a weed eater motor so a small amount of mixed gas would pump a lot of water.

I have always depended on the kindness of strangers. It's amazing how nice people can be when they see you're carrying a shotgun and a handful of cash.

Re: Personal contingency plan

How worried should I be of this and is it really that bad of a thing if I don't have one of these PCPs? (I don't btw...neither does my family.)

Okay, maybe I should elaborate. We don't have a plan per se. We have some things that could count towards "emergency supplies". Plenty of blankets and our comforters. Lots of canned foods in the kitchen. Parents have a few hand-crank LED lights and I've got an assortment of battery powered ones (plus a good amount of unused batteries in storage). We don't have any sort of generator. We don't have any MREs (parents haven't even heard of the term). And depending on the situation, we either run out the front/back door or we huddle together with the rest of the family and decide from there.

PCP is the last thing you want to have in an emergency, despite the superhuman strength.

Gotta admit, thats the first thing I thought of. The US Government is advocating PCP's?!

Dude, just gather up the stuff you think you'll need in an emergency and toss it in a backpack that you can grab on your way out the door. It's not too difficult or expensive. You can make a more elaborate plan if you want to, certainly, but something is better than nothing. A backpack with a first aid kit, a flashlight, some PowerBars, and maybe a canteen or camelback inside it would be a great start. I picture Houston evacuating for a hurricane, with folks stuck in traffic for up to 24 hours straight. Considering that all of the stores and restaurants are closed because they're evacuating too, what will you need to survive for a day? Is a toothbrush a necessity? Any medication? Dog food for fluffy? Do you need a lantern because you're afraid of the dark, or will a small flashlight do?

Hmmm, I'm not sure. I can point you towards some guys (they might seem nutty at first, and some will seem nutty no matter how long you read their posts, but they're good people) that will DEFINITELY know, though: http://www.ar15.com/forums/board.html?b=10 Yes, some of them are preparing for the end of the world as we know it, and others are just throwing a backpack together.

OK, here's a stickied thread on a Bug Out Bag: http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.htm...&f=18&t=506065

Food, for 3 days it isn't much but you have to make sure that you have enough packed to ensure your body gets what it needs! There are many pack meals out there from the MRE to freeze dried. From a BOB aspect you need to have both"hot" and cold meals. When using your BOB you may not have a fire or the chance or ability to cook. Having some fast eats is important.
MRE's are the best for on the good foods BUT they are heavy, even when broken down. But they are a great source of what you need to stay on top of things.
Freeze drieds or dried foods like Mountain house are great for in camp or when you need a hot meal. Their main advantage is that they weigh very little, their down fall is the price.
Dried foods like rice, noodles and soup mixes are also a good choice. these are light, and very cheap.
I like to pack lipton rice/pasta sides with some foil packed chicken added to it. Ive had very good luck with these infield, cook times are fast, price is low and there is enough food to even feed 2 if need be. Normal packages weigh in around 5-7oz's!
I pack one of these each day for the dinner meals and No cook meals for lunch, like MRE entrees or the foil packed chicken with some spices, trail mix or a energy bar.
Bagged tuna can also be used in simple meals or by itself along with salmon or dried beef. Of course i can go on and on about different foods but these are pretty basic meals and ones used by the majority of folks with BOB's since they are shelf stable for long periods.
The Food and Recipes forum will probably have specific info like what you're asking for. http://www.ar15.com/forums/forum.html?b=10&f=19

Unless your heart is set on MREs, it looks like Mountain House meals are your best bet: http://www.amazon.com/Mountain-House...197914&sr=1-10

Re: Personal contingency plan

Cing points out some good stuff that every house should have. It does not matter the emergency, it could be something as simple as a power outage. Just make sure to occasionally check the items say once a year to see if anything expires. One or two things I would add is something like a hand crank radio (requires no batteries) and a water purification set. Both are relatively cheap and can be used for other times like camping.

As for me I have those basics as well as a couple thousand rounds for my guns! people do crazy things when they are desperate!!
