It's funny that Michael Moore doesn't mention that gun crime in Britain has increased since the total gun ban took effect.

Re: Anonymous: Do you own, or have you ever shot a gun?

Does anybody else do much hunting? It seems most are shooting targets.

I have to amend my previous post a bit. While I never went to a shooting range and shot at targets I spent many, many hours sitting on the back porch shooting at... well anything that looked like it needed shooting. Or on a tailgate shooting at whatever. Or walking down the river/creek bed shooting at things.

My first gun was either 12 or 20 gauge single shot. Got it at the ripe age of 13 to hunt turkey. Also did a lot of dove hunting with that thing. Nothing will sharpen your skills like shooting at fast, skittish dove and only getting one shot to get your prey.

Soon after that I got a .22 semi for, you guessed it, shooting stuff. Rabbit hunting with a .22 is good fun. Best time is right after a light snow. Real pretty scenery and easy to find them.

Next was a 30/30 lever action. Got it for deer hunting but never got a deer. Only saw one. Don't much like big game myself.

After that bought an assortment of shotguns and a couple of rifles. Never liked handguns much since they are not particularly effective for hunting.

Gave them all to my brothers after I entered the Navy. Now I have only one shotgun. A 20 gauge pump. Bought it at my last house to kill all the skunks and armadillos that wandered into my yard.

Don't even hunt much anymore. To much of a hassle living in suburbia.

Re: Anonymous: Do you own, or have you ever shot a gun?

I have quite a few relatives who hunt, and a couple that hunt and raise all of their meat, even making gloves and whatnot from the fur. However, my opportunities to hunt are extremely rare. I move every three years or so, and usually live in locations overseas or stateside that aren't exactly hunting-conducive. If I own a weapon, it's out of real necessity for self-protection more than my enjoyment of firearms.

Keep in mind that the restrictions on purchase aren't the same as the restrictions on ownership. I plan on getting a rifle for my 7 year old son, and once I give it to him, it'll be his legally. (But, like his Nintendo DS and his Wii, it's subject to being confiscated if he misbehaves!)

Mass issues an ID that they call a "Federal ID"? That's strange...

I wish I grew up hunting. At this point in my life, unless I win that Mega Millions jackpot and am able to purchase a large piece of property, I don't know that I'll ever get into hunting. I grew up in the city and just never had the opportunity. Now I live in the 'burbs and don't have the time or even know where to look to get started if I wanted to...

I'm pretty sure that lamping or spotlighting is illegal nearly everywhere in the US for game animals. Pest are probably a different story, though. I don't know if I'd find that to be nearly as rewarding in a sporting manner, but I can see the desire if they're truly causing damage, though.

Since we're on the topic of hunting, has anyone here ever gone trophy hunting? I'm not talking about game hunting and being proud of an impressive rack, I mean has anyone gone out to kill something solely to be able to say and show that you've killed it? I've never understood that, and am curious to know some of the reasons why people enjoy it.

Re: Anonymous: Do you own, or have you ever shot a gun?

I go hunting a few times a year, mainly depending on the weather. These days I mostly hunt pheasant and quail and I only like pheasant hunting in the snow. A while back I was into deer and turkey hunting but that got old. I prefer to be out walking fields instead of sitting on my buns getting cold.

Although I guess if I had to put out the effort that my father did on his last deer I might do that. They have a lot of deer and other assorted wildlife that regularly walk out of their fields and into the lawn and like to ruin trees. So my mother told him he needed to get rid of the big buck that was tearing all the branches off her trees she was trying to plant.

So basically all the effort he had to put into getting a very nice deer was get a license, get up one morning, slide down the top part of the kitchen window, and shoot a deer in his underwear while staying warm. Then he proceeded to make some coffee and prepare to get dressed and load it into the truck to take to the meat packing plant.

Unfortunately I live in the city and other than the occasional rabbit(bleh) I am not going to see anything worth shooting in my underwear.

Paranoia, by definition, relates to fear of unknown or irrational circumstances.

People who chose to protect themselves are not paranoid, anymore so than a person who locks their doors at night. Crime is a very real aspect of life.

Whether or not you choose to defend yourself is irrelevant to other people. I would just appreciate it if you wouldn't label those interested in self-defense as paranoid.

and I know that statistically, someone I love is more likely to be shot with a home defense gun than an actual intruder so the home defense angle doesn't sell it for me.
I heard this statistic repeated numerous times and I've never actually seen the data. The numbers I have found seem to prove it wrong.

The only thing I have considered is that it's based around the notions that:
A. Most home invasion scenarios end when the occupant pulls his weapon (or just confronts the invader) and the suspect flees, hence, you stopped the crime but didn't shoot him/her.
B. Ignorant adults and children alike kill themselves a year (still a statistic that's like 10% of how many kids drown a year in pools).
C. Takes into account drug deals "gone bad" in which acquaintances (guys trying to buy drugs) are counted as "Loved ones."

I've studied Gun Control issues at length over the past years. Most Gun Control advocates rely on distorted statistics or outright fabrication. I'm not saying you are doing this, just that the myths of sayings like "You're more likely to kill someone you love" are just as bad as "You'll shoot your eye out kid."

Best line I've ever heard on the issue: "America doesn't have a problem with gun violence, American has a problem with violence in general."

Gun crime is high in the US, but it doesn't stand out (and is in fact dwarfed) by most other forms of violent crime. That said, law abiding citzens with guns (by definition) do not commit crimes with firearms. And owning a gun doesn't make you any more predisposed to committing crimes.

Hands down the Wilson. The Kimber is a good gun but there is no comparison in build quality. The trigger on the Wilson is better than the Kimber and although I doubt I'm reaching the accuracy limits of the Kimber, I'm just more accurate with the Wilson. But the number one reason the Wilson wins- I've had multiple FTFs with the Kimber and zero with the Wilson, for that reason I'll probably never carry the Kimber.
