Are you using shotgun shells as trigger guards?

Wow. Most of the people that I've talked to about their Kimbers have loved 'em. FTF's would scare me, too. Have you talked to Kimber about them?

Fenix, didn't you have a Kimber with problems, too?

My fantasies about owning a Kimber are starting to fade away...

I think I'll stick with H&K. I've got around 10,000 rounds through my USP Compact .40 and not a single malfunction. I really want to get a P2000.

Poker, I'm pretty sure those were just used to prop the pistols up for the photo.

If you're looking at a Kimber I'd do some reading on a few forums. They are good guns but there is a lot of press out there about quality control problems. Some minor, some major. Odds are you will probably get a good one and not have any problems but I feel if you're paying that much money for a gun you shouldn't have to worry about playing the odds. I will say most of my FTF's were probably due to certain ammunition. The Kimber just seems more finicky where the Wilson eats anything I put through it. The other thing is Kimber doesn't have the best reputation in the customer service department. Wilson has the best customer service I've dealt with. They will fix any problem on the gun free of charge. It doesn't matter if you are the first owner or the 20th owner of the gun, it has a lifetime no hassle warranty. Nighthawk custom, Les Baer and others are the same way. If I had it to do over again I'd of not purchased the Kimber and would have spent the money towards a Wilson, Nighthawk, etc.
I had a USP 45 for years and I just sold it a couple of months ago. They're rock solid guns. After I started shooting 1911's, it pretty much ruined me for shooting the USP and XD because the trigger is so much different. The 1911 fits my hands much better as well. The down side to the 1911 is ammo capacity compared to the double stack guns like the USP.

Yes. Kimber Compact Tactical Ultra II. The FTF and failure to eject (Stove-piping) problems have worked themselves out after about 2000 rounds, but it still didn't sit well with me. I replaced the Kimber with my PX4 for carry and could not be more satisfied.

Re: Anonymous: Do you own, or have you ever shot a gun?

I have trouble with my Glock 21 jamming a lot. Has anyone else had any problems? From what I have read Glocks should be very reliable. It has gotten so bad that when I go to the range I don't even like to shoot it anymore and I stick with my other ones. The bullet gets stuck when it is about 1/2 way into the chamber about once every 30-40 rounds. I have tried different types of ammo and different magazines (thinking maybe the spring was worn out). I clean it after everytime I shoot and I take very good care of it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Have you ever cleaned the chamber with a chamber cleaning tool? It is a special brush that is much stiffer than the regular cleaning brush. You might have some caked up gunk in the chamber that your normal cleaning brush isn't getting out. Here is one from Wilson, but I'm sure you can get them anywhere.

You also might need to replace your recoil spring. It is a good idea to replace it every few thousand rounds.

I use the barrel cleaning brush that looks like a long version of that but I will pick up one of those and give it a try. I would guess that about 2,000 rounds have gone through it so I will try changing the recoil spring. I think the guy I got it from may have put a different sping in it for some reason but I still have the almost brand new original. Thanks for the suggestions.

From a lot of past experience, that is usually the extractor on the slide. Look on the slide to where the firing protrudes and see if there are any brass shavings around there. If you see any, disassemble the slide paying attention to the extractor. You might be shocked once you open it up to see what you find. Yes the Glock is reliable, but depending on the quality of the ammo you are using, it make cause this kind of fouling which leads to the issue you are describing.

Keep in mind it is only for cleaning the chamber. Do not use it in the end of the barrel.

Is it failing to feed a live round? Or is it failing to eject a spent round? Both are usually separate issues.

Failure to feed issues are generally a defect in the gun. Either the mag isn't lining up correctly with the barrel, or the spring isn't providing enough resistance to "jam" the new round into the chamber.

Some guns (usually lighter models) can have issues with FTF if you lack a solid firing platform. Because you allow your wrist to bend back, you are taking away some of the momentum needed to fully extend the slide back. This can also account for failures in ejecting spent casings. The is a huge issues with the compact .45 1911 models. The 1911 was designed to have a very strong spring and heavy slide/barrel. The weight of all that literally jams the bullet into the chamber. Without that weight, your grip control needs to be spot on with the compact models.

But on a Glock, I seriously doubt it's anything you're doing. It's most likely the gun has a defect. Glocks are just too well made to fail based on the shooters lack of wrist and recoil control.

If it's a failure to eject, then it could be the extractor, spring/guide-rod, or your grip. Like I said, most likely it's the weapon itself.

As for cleaning: My PX4 hasn't seen a scrub brush or lubricating oil in well over a year and I have yet to run into one failure on the weapon. Yes, it is THAT well designed.

If you do keep a pistol for carry or home defense, I highly recommend you use another gun for a bit and quit cleaning your weapon for a specific amount of time to test it's reliability. Also, don't only go to the shooting range on nice dry sunny days. Go out when it's raining and nasty (provided they actually have a covered shooting area). Let the gun get nasty and then see how it performs.

I took my PX4 out in these conditions (the rain was literally going sideways, soaking me. I was one of like 6 people at the range that day). My gun performed perfectly, giving me even more faith in it's ability.

Know your weapon inside and out. If you ever even REMOTELY think you might use it to defend your life, your well off making sure it will perform.

Re: Anonymous: Do you own, or have you ever shot a gun?

I go shooting often and own 6 firearms and am in the process of getting a 22 Ruger Mark III pistol.

Benelli M4 (just like the one in PoE except for the stock)
Colt Ar15 Accurized
Beretta 92f
Remington 22mag
Remington 22 pump
Old school single shot shotgun (very old)

Grew up around firearms and have been shooting for as long as I can remember. I have been hunting but never enjoyed killing things even if we did eat them. So I do not really hunt but I have no issue with those who do and use what they kill for something other than a trophy (Personally I feel the whole trophy thing is disrespectful to the animal).

Back home I have a wooded area of about 370 acres in the mountains that I can go shooting, camping, off roading, whatever anytime. Here though I only have national parks as an option and I just do not feel comfortable at a range around a lot of other people that I do not know and without any standards or supervison (some of these people I am convinced are inbreed).

So I need a place to shoot here in TN which is private or well policed. It is nice to see so many avid shooters on here.

Re: Anonymous: Do you own, or have you ever shot a gun?

Thanks for the help guys. I changed out the spring and took it shooting today. I put about 250 rounds through it with out any problems! Sorry for the slight hijack of the thread too.

Walther P99 .40 cal
RRA AR-15 A4
Mosin Nagant M44

Soon to be adding either a Springfield Socom 16 or an M1A scout, can't decide :/.
