Re: Anonymous: Do you own, or have you ever shot a gun?
I marked "No way, no how. I don't like guns at all and avoid being near them."
Yet I do have a 1907-1915 Delauney Belleville rifle standing in the corner of my room. It has been disabled so it cannot fire (led in the barrel or something), but the bolt-action mechanism is still working. AFAIK it was actually used in WWI. I wanted to choose "I own a gun, but avoid functioning guns if possible." That said I might enjoy going to a shooting range at one point, but any other, less controlled situation I steer clear of guns, and violent people in general. Yesterday a 15yr old kid knifed another one in the neck 5 times, outside the school only a kilometre away from me. It is my personal belief that if Belgium would have laxer gun-laws, this boy would be shot in the head and dead, instead of critically wounded in the hospital. I bet it's easier to pull a trigger, then to push a knife into a person 5 times. That shows dedication. This was added just to explain my position, not to start a discussion about gun laws. PS. if anyone knows any good collector sites for WW1/2 military equipment, or sites where they trade such stuff, please pm me. As is my GF's grandfather has a collection of 300 of those helmets, nades and other stuff, and we are starting to sell some of these to collectors, over e-bay etc.

Re: Anonymous: Do you own, or have you ever shot a gun?
It really gets me how some people most of whom have no REAL exposure to firearms talk about guns and violent people in the same sentence all the time as if they go hand in hand.
Even more troubling is now this alleged connection exists in the liberal media in news, tv shows, and movies. Just a couple days ago we were watching CSI Miami and they had narrowed down the list of suspects for a murder to like a dozen people and then one of those people not only had a gun registared to them but he also had a carry permit. The show plays this dramatic music and all the cast members on screen give each other these dire looks like you are supposed to know from this information that this guy must be the one they are looking for!!! (Even though the crime was not a firearm crime.) Of course, when they find this guy he is a wacked out crazy type person (of course because he owns a gun right!?!). Thats one example but I see it ALL the time and it is sickening. You mention the stabbing of that kid but has it ever occured to you that there are evil people out there who want to do bad things and firearms are just their tool of choice. When the firearms are removed, the outlaws will still get them or they will get other tools which they can use harm of people. Here in the states, there has been a lot of bogus stats to attempt to malign lawful gun owners and mislead the public. As more and more anti firearm media comes out, more and more people who are ignorant on firearms become more and more scared of these tools to the point where firearms become a boogy man with a mind of its own. I know many people IRL who are just un-rationally afraid of firearms. Afraid they will just "go off" (when we all know it must be FIRED) or fall over and point towards them at which point they are sure to "go off" or the oddest of how if it does just "go off" that the bullet will be magical and come right for them no matter which direction the gun is pointed. Those bogus stats suggest all sorts of lies and distortions about gun crime in the states. Bottom line without ranting even more is this. People who obtain firearms in a lawful way are not likly to commit a crime with them. Some have and do, but they are in the extreme minority. Those who get carry permits are even more so lawfull to the point that almost no crimes have ever been commited by people who own a carry permit even though the irrational anti gun nuts were screaming it would be like the wild west with police dying in the streets and crime through the roof with the passage of carry laws. In fact the opposite is true and crime has actually dropped by a HUGE amount in those areas. |

Quote:
It takes a lot less skill to use to knife than it does a firearm. Sure, Steven Seagal may go through a 10 minute long knife fight scene, but in reality: it's over brutally fast with the attacker being able to get in numerous stabs with his weapon before the victim can even respond. As much as Hollywood would like you to believe otherwise: firing a handgun actually requires a decent amount of skill. Even among police officers, fire-fights at close ranges (10 yards or closer) with both fighters mobile, usually ends with neither person receiving a bullet wound. Yes, it is THAT hard to hit a moving target with your average pistol. Shooting an IDPA match with moving targets while you are also moving is ridiculously hard, even at close range. I've seen guys do it. But those that score well are usually the cream of the crop in competitive shooting. Now, do this when your adrenaline is in full swing. The harsh reality is that all that adrenaline hinders the firearm shooter and HELPS the knife wielder.

Re: Anonymous: Do you own, or have you ever shot a gun?
Please don’t forget that at organized shooting matches (IDPA, ICORE, IPSC…) there is NOT a lot of pressure, as in fight-or-flight, on the shooter. It is easy to get into the Zone when that is all you have to worry about.
I do alright in a course of fire in a friendly competition. I can’t imagine how I would do if my life was at stake, that kind of skill only comes with training and experience. Good point about the adrenaline helping the Knife and hurting the Gun. Sarcoma

GASP! You have a .50 caliber rifle? Isn't that the weapon of snipers and terrorists?
Seriously, I bet the recent talk about banning .50 cal rifles is really chapping your (and your shooting buddies') hide!

don't forget,Thats CAP and BALL.
read up on black power weapons. I also use the real stuff, not pyodex. I used to open carry my .45's, sometime in a custom made sholder holster. no law against that here. I asked a state trooper once I ment moons ago while out goose hunting with my BP 10ga, he told me BP is not considered a lethal wepon here. LOL, I told I bet I could put a bigger hole in him with my 1858 new army then his wimpy 9mm could in me. he laughed and said I probley was right. I ended up building him a side by side 12ga BP that winter.
