Re: IL2:1946, Calling all pilots....
I picked this up at my local Game Stop for $20 bucks a few days ago. I've been playing some of the sp campaign stuff and I think I'm ready for some TG online action.
Except...I've been playing on the easiest settings. I never was motivated enough to learn how to fly on realistic settings. I'm willing to learn how to do that but can I join in with you guys online if my realism setttings are different than yours.
I'd welcome some tutoring action as well.

Re: IL2:1946, Calling all pilots....
I'm not a great dogfight pilot but I can certainly help y'all with the basics. Add me to xfire (kevlarorc) and then we can hop in a hyperlobby server or the TFR server and practice.
You can buy 1946 on Steam for $10. I used to play the original IL2 on a Dimension L866r with a 4mb integrated gfx so just about any computer can run it and you don't need a super fancy joystick either but it will certainly help if you have extra buttons on the jstick for important plane functions.
And Delta, when you're learning you don't really have to worry about most of the functions other than gear, flaps, and throttle but then as you get into it more you can start messing around with the advanced functions. I myself have never even touched the oil pressure, magnetos, superchargers, etc. I've noticed the biggest difference you need to get over from easy to hard difficulties is the limited ammo, stalls, and spins. The rest is fairly easy to adjust to. Most pub servers will be on hard difficulty but some of them will let you use external views and other things like that. Expect to get seriously owned for a while on Pub servers though, I still am.
I'm always up for having some wingmen. It definitely helps to have some people to get enemies off your tail and stuff.

Re: IL2:1946, Calling all pilots....
not sure I like it, crashed twice once on take off the other because I couldn't pull up fast enough, thing was moving like a snail in all directions. Couldn't dog fight cause my joystick is fed up
IM iffy on it now, the IL2Demo didnt exactly leave a good impression

Re: IL2:1946, Calling all pilots....
Grunt, it doesn't matter what your in-game settings are: the server is king in this game.
Delta, give it a go: the MSFS/CFS1+2 family was my flight sim of choice from 1993 or so, despite attempts by Falcon 4.0 and Janes FA18, until I finally gave in and picked up IL-2 in '01. Both have been coexisting on my computer since. IL-2 has some strong points - rigid control of mods until recently, for example, guns and bombs for another, while MSFS has other good areas: much better systems and multiengine control, worldwide scenery, etc. One thing I would really recommend is going through the key commands in IL2 and changing as much as possible to reflect what you have in MSFS.
We have a pretty good group of folks that are meeting Thursdays on the TFR server around 8.30p Eastern, and my dedicated server stands in as backup. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions or whatnot.

I think we need more than one session a week.

Re: IL2:1946, Calling all pilots....
Definitely. I need way more practice before I can do well in the pubs.
edit: as opposed to posting another reply, I use the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro and it works quite well and was only around $20 about a year ago.

Re: IL2:1946, Calling all pilots....
I agree. We do need more than one session a week.
Lots of fun last night. Some great missions and great teamwork all around even though I had a long swim back to the carrier.
Come on out and join us guys. Pick up the game for 10 bucks at your local Circuit City or BB. It's a blast and continually gets more fun as you learn.
As for profile issues with programming joysticks, you can program most stuff directly in game. You don't even need the Saitek software. I personally use a X45 so I use the Saitek software for a few things. However, there are other options as well.
SVMapper - allows you to map buttons to any device. Works great, really simple.
Autohotkey - can do just about anything. Much harder to learn, but can do everything.
There are even other options. Come on out on Thursday nights. We have a good crowd and have a lot fun with missions that are fairly realistic and then some craziness right as the night winds down. LOL! PARTY BUS FTW!!!
Come and join us!

Re: IL2:1946, Calling all pilots....
yeah the profiler isnt for this game its for BF2 cause if I go past halfway the throttle reverses direction and thats annoying(I cut groove marks with my knife on throttle to mark middle still not perfect)The biggest issue though is my joystick never has been calibrated well. Last time I played IL2 demo I kept climbing when in neutral

Re: IL2:1946, Calling all pilots....
Hey Guys, I was searching the forums looking for IL-2 pilots...
So, I'm up for Thursdays, I get home around 9 EST, so I'm available from then on.
I'm used to hard core servers, but I'm up for anything so long as it's this lovely game. Anyone happen to have a Saitek X-45 profile? Anything will do, I can adjust as necessary.

Re: IL2:1946, Calling all pilots....
First: Kevlar, nice landing with only half a tail
Second: I have had 1946 since it came out, and i have never played it online! It looks good played with the TG guys though! Are there patches to get? I used to love flight sims, and this saves me buying Falcon!

We may in fact get something going this weekend. I'll let everyone know.

Do not put it in your program x86 files. It can go in the standard program files or you can add a new directory entry expressly for the game.

Haha, that was actually me filming JBRanger as he landed with half a tail.. I'm the guy with the bashed up sturmovik on the end of the runway when my gear wouldnt come out. lol
To play online get the 4.08m patch and download hyperlobby client. There is a 4.09 patch but apparently it's been in beta for a year or something and almost all servers use 4.08m
