    Re: IL2:1946, Calling all pilots....

Finally got my DL working. Going to get some practice in tonight. May or may not make it on tomorrow depending on a) how successful a date I have tomorrow is and b) whether or not I can keep myself from colliding with the ground tonight while practicing. Thanks for the PM, JBRanger. Fortunate for me, D2D's download is v4.08, so no patching or the such for me.

    EDIT:
Alrighty. Three attempts so far, all with the IL-2 Series 1. First attempt, I didn't realise that I had to fight the torque during take-off the moment I let off the breaks. Second attempt, smooth take-off, stalled myself while climbing, ate trees. Third attempt, smooth take-off, smooth climb (though I didn't get as high as I think I should have), semi-decent flight, overheated my engines. I haven't done flight sims since 98. Steep learning curve, eh?

Also... I guess that getting a force-feedback joystick would be well worth it? Does IL-2 even support FF? The shake of the aircraft feels unnatural when the joystick stays steady.

Getting off the ground on the third takeoff attempt is quite good with IL2 on full realism! I don't know if IL2 supports force-feedback but I have a feeling it doesn't.

Unfortunately I can't make it tomorrow because I have to work at night but JB might be there as well as a few other people (Coucho, Google, BarnacleofDoom)

Here is a video I made tonight while fooling around practicing carrier landings with various aircraft. I tried landing with a C-47 first and that didn't work out so I went with something a tad easier

    1. - Hit "L" to lock your tailwheel on takeoff, it makes a huge difference (or bind another key to do it)
    2. - Were your flaps deployed? Some aircraft need them deployed to the first stage, some don't. You also need to make sure you pick up enough airspeed before starting to pull back on the stick, and pull back GENTLY. Then turn to your departure heading and ease back into a 10 - 15 degree climb to start picking up altitude without stalling. Most planes have an ideal climb speed that you'll want to shoot for, but you'd probably have to look that up in the object viewer stats or something based on the plane you're flying.
    3. - Pull back the throttle to below 100% for cruising. WEP is only for emergency situations and carrier takeoff as far as I am concerned. I usually try to cruise at about 2/3 throttle during level flight, maybe a little less. This will also reduce some of the torque steer you'll get (which can also be offset with a little rudder or aileron trim). Someone else w/ more experience with this game might give you a better suggestion.

You also want to set a pair of keys to elevator trim that are within easy reach. I have them on the base of my joystick. It makes takeoff/landing, cruising, gunnery, etc... much easier when you're not fighting the stick every step of the way.

I don't know if IL-2 supports force feedback. I think you may need a mod to get it to work.

Aw that little snippet from cockpit view made me really want TrackIR. My absolute biggest problem right now is tracking enemy aircraft. Padlock is too disorienting and panning around with the thumb hat is not easy either. I must admit though, I have a good few games here that I could use it with... Wouldn't mind trying LOMAC with it either.

Hehe, the video was all filmed after I flew it all so that view was done with a mouse but it is basically what TrackIR does. I just got TrackIR recently and it takes a lot of getting used to before you can do a multi-G turn while looking up without spinning out.

As for takeoff tips, I think flaps can actually make it harder to learn taking off, at least on smaller aircraft. It seems like larger bomber aircraft get the most benefit but when you deploy takeoff flaps on small fighters it feels very unstable, especially on things like the Spitfire, Mustang and Bf-109. If you are overheating while climbing you can bind a key that will toggle between Radiator settings, small engines (I-153, I-16) will not like having their radiators open all the time though.

    Re: IL2:1946, Calling all pilots....

I watched the IL-2 Take-off tutorial first, so I knew to set the flaps to take-off. Didn't know about locking the tailwheel, though.

I went and ran some custom missions starting from the air. Was piloting an IL-2 1 Series, had three IL-2 3 Series as friendlies, with four J8As as bogies, all average skill level. Got my first confirmed kill during my second mission, but didn't get any more after four more tries.

I'll probably make it tomorrow, give ya'll an easy target. I do have one question, though: What would you all call the easiest fighter to get into?

From my own point of view as a noob to this game (not to flight sims), I thought the Wildcat was the easiest. The gauges are laid out logically if you've played any other flight sims, they're big and easy to read (and in English), and the aircraft seems to be as easy to fly as any. I also find the RAF's Hurricane to be a very easy aircraft to fly, but I prefer the control panel of the Wildcat.

If you're looking to get into a Luftwaffe aircraft, I have taken to the Bf-109, but others may have different suggestions.

hey Gents...mind if i join ya one of these days for some flight time. i used to fly IL2 all the time with my old clan, but they stopped flying...and so did i. i haven't flown in a while, but i used to be a pretty good level bombing pilot, and ground attack. not much of a fighter pilot tho...we used to do co-ops most of the time, but occasionally when we have enuf people we would do dogfight maps (i would usually bomb their airfields from 10,000 feet > )

Was fun tonight, even if I did get off the ground only three times. Thank you, Barnacle, for the help!

Hey everyone, sorry wasn't there last night as I had previous engagements. Hope all went well. Most of you I have pm'ed, but I may have missed someone. Didn't realize there would be this much interest!

Yea, we have the dogfight server up just for kicks but the real meat and potatoes happen when we (Barn or myself) host co-op games. Those are INTENSE!

Also, we have so far ran a couple nights of air racing which can be great fun.

I'll try and post some followup details regarding taking off and landing.

Since I don't have an IL2 forum here for different topics, please refer to here:

Sorry, I couldn't make it last night. I was hoping some people would be on between 6-8, but I didn't see anyone and I wasn't able to get on later! Maybe next week.

I was on for a bit, as was Bucklin, Google, and Col. Jeremy. We ended a little early as Google had to take off around 9 Central and I had to do the same shortly thereafter.

Definitely. It's hard finding people on my days off (mon, wed, fri) Hit me up on xfire, create an IL2 channel in TG, or go into the TFR teamspeak and I'll be there. Hopfully I'll wake up early lol.
