Re: Flight Sims for Noobs
I think I tried Falcon 4 once. There was a bunch of things to learn but Jex and Fanatik always compare flight sims to Falcon. They also have a bunch of good fun with IL2 (Pacific Fighters) but I'm not into flying those old planes. I find it very difficult to stay alive because it's more about piloting skills and fast thinking. Lock On has been my favourite but the rest of TE doesn't really like it because of old missions and some graphics issues. It just seems easier to fly a jet with advanced instruments. All the concentration then goes to the attack plan.

Re: Flight Sims for Noobs
Yeah the graphics are pretty dated but the sim is WAY more detailed than either lomac or IL2. It's a constant pleasant surprise. That and there's a true dynamic campaign. Flying along on a night mission you can see all sorts of activity going on down below and lots of friendly and unfriendly traffic in the air to sort out. It's just a flat out bangroovitasticzimzamzoodle of a sim. I can't wait to see what this update really looks like.

Re: Flight Sims for Noobs
Ok, I found a copy of Falcon 4, which was not as easy as I thought it would be. Now, what do i need to download. I found patch 1.08. Was that the last one? And what about these Superpaks (4.0/4.2) that Fileplanet has? What else do I need? I saw mention of something called hyperlobby as well....it that necessary?

What are your specs? F4 is a pretty old game.

Play the training missions one at a time, and don't worry about learning the avionics until you can land every time. There's a lot to learn in this game and you have to eat the elephant one bite at a time.
Have you read BeachAV8R's training missions over at Simhq?

I found that using the config from the SP4 patch worked wonders. FRAPS now reads ~20fps, which is acceptable for play. There are some frame skipping and terrain smoothing effects that were added that put a big hit on the CPU.
SP4 manual is included...it's really in depth, but some of it I figured out by doing some instant missions.Did you get the manual with your copy? It's kind of required reading. Good suggestions. I haven't read BeachAV8R's stuff, but now I think I will.Play the training missions one at a time, and don't worry about learning the avionics until you can land every time. There's a lot to learn in this game and you have to eat the elephant one bite at a time.

Holy crap I can't believe I found this:
http://users.telenet.be/whity/F-16s/f4_manual.pdf
So yeah, just read that and you'll be set.
Interesting thing about F4 I learned last summer: you can pretty much read the ACTUAL Lockheed-Martin f-16 manual, do what it says to do in F4, and it works as described. Pretty much every thing in F4 is as it is in the real deal, with radar ranges, missile performance, classified stuff changed to protect the good old us of a.

Re: Flight Sims for Noobs
Yeah, Jex and Fanatik ran me through Falcon the other day. It's slow over dial-up though. It's definitely an immersive sim. I like how you don't really have to remember all these key buttons because you just remember where the actual button is in the cockpit.
The campaigns are awesome to play online. I tried over dial-up but it's just too much information to pass so load times are long. It's great though. It's not like Lock-On where the skies seem so barren. The campaign missions have other missions flying at the same time so you can hear and see updates. You could pass by an engagement along the way to your mission objective.
The thing with Falcon is it's old so the graphics aren't top notch. However, you can really see where the development money went. Everything about it has made it the most immersive flight sim I have ever played. It is truly something to compare to future flight sims. If something newer doesn't cut it, you go back to Falcon.

Post over here as well when you do. I'm sure we'd be able to pry some folks away from Battlefield 2 long enough for a couple of sorties.

I fly IL2. Good times. Fly with 13th Squadron. I've been flying with them for about a year. Good guys. We just started a new campaign taking us from the beginning of the war to the end.
As real as it gets....

In the pursuit of... something.
