I will say this, Spore isnt for typically impatient, uncreative gamers. All is well in this regard until you get to the Civilization stage, which is basically a WALL of options. You can basically make anything you can imagine and for many people that's a bit much.

Honestly, though.... I've fooled with many 3D CAD systems and 3d modeling solftware and in many ways this simple game blows them away. It's so easy to get what you want out of it that it really opens up creative doors for people that dont have the patience to fool around with apps like 3dsMax or Maya.

If you're buying Spore for the GAME, then dont bother. It's a pure Sandbox with assorted easter eggs and accomplishments you can unlock, all the while sharing your creations with others. They even give you your own webpage to maintain your creations publicly, along with sporecasts (blogs basically). That's a whole helluva lot for $50. But, it's not a game.

So far for me the "gameyest" thing I could think of is trying to figure out how to take down the Epic boss' in Creature mode. This requires finding and using the most powerful public creatures you can get and then populating your world with them. I havent gotten that into it yet though.

All the bad ratings I was where bashing the DRM. And from what I hear the DRM is horrible.

You have to activate the game to play. You can only activate three times then must call in to get a single new activation.

It does suck but I think this a general reaction to the DRM. Me personally I will wait till it is 29.95 or less.

Yeah, the DRM is a deal-breaker for me. I tend to do fresh OS installs, I build my pc's part by part, etc - that DRM leaves me uneasy.

I had it in my hands yesterday and put it down. Games like this I tend to revisit many times over many years. I have probably installed and uninstalled Sim-City 2000 a dozen times.

When it gets to the bargain bin I will buy it. Or if they decide to reduce the DRM crap.

I agree 100%. I've reinstalled old games over the years many times while waiting for something to come along and really grab my attention. A sandbox game like this definitely has that potential, but EA has hamstrung my ability to do so with the current DRM.

I've long since stopped trying to fight the good fight and get companies to realize that DRM only causes problems for people who purchase the product, not for pirates. So, just do what I do and avoid the issue altogether: buy it and then get the crack. The software company gets their money for their efforts, you get your game DRM free.

    Re: Spore - Ultimate Sim?

The bad part of the situations that arise with people not buying products containing DRM tools like this it probably hurts the developers more than the publishers, as I would think the publishing companies have more projects moving and probably can make more of a turnaround on many products. I believe Maxis is part of EA now (and many other companies they've gobbled up), so they probably wouldn't/won't be effected too much by people not buying their game as I would imagine EA will continue supporting Maxis.

They'l have to continue supporting Maxis. I mean, theres 10 other Sims 2 expansion packs on the line! as well as Sims 3 and the 20 various expansion packs of 20 new objects lined up!

Plus theres the whole Spore line. They were planning on turning Spore into a brandname, like a Hello Kitty type of thing.

Theres no doubt they'l continue to use Maxis to churn out stuff.

    Irony.....

    http://techdirt.com/articles/20081205/1533083035.shtml

Spore's DRM So Effective It Was The Most Downloaded Game Of The Year
    from the nice-work,-EA dept

It never really made sense for EA to be so insistent on having draconian DRM on games. Before the company even launched Spore people made it quite clear the plan would backfire, but EA went forward with it anyway, creating a PR nightmare. And all for what? Turns out (not surprisingly) the DRM didn't do squat to stop unauthorized file sharing. Spore has now been declared the most downloaded video game of the year. And, even though the year's not over, no other game is going to catch up. And, it's worth noting, the game only launched in October, so this is only over a couple of months. In other words, EA's "antipiracy strategy" backfired almost completely. The company got a huge PR blackeye which probably only encouraged more people to download the game via file sharing. Can someone explain, again, why any company thinks DRM works?

this is kind of like saying banning all guns will stop crime.....
