Re: New MS Flight Sim (FSX)
Found a real gem here, a nice tweakguide for FSX that has me running around 30 FPS now steady with AA on and overall texture quality on High.
http://members.cox.net/spambait/FSXTweakGuide.pdf
I've only implemented 4 of the tweaks, and I'm already blown away with the quality I can now run this at. So far I'm using the low res tree and cloud textures, disabled autogen.xml and copied the new autogendescriptions file to reduce the variety in trees. Autogen density is still set to normal though. Some pics:

I keep getting happier and happier with this game.

Re: New MS Flight Sim (FSX)
I played this a lot more last night, and I like it better now. I did the 'land a fully loaded 747 mission with zero visibility, no fuel and in a monsoon' mission last night. That was fun! I really want to try this multiplayer... the workload is sometimes a bit high flying a big plane by yourself, but that's no different from any other flight sim, really.
I learned how to do ILS landings (by hand too!) back from flying x-plane, although I'm thinking of spending more time practicing my navigation (I never got the hang of navigating between fixes). GPS depresses me since it makes things so easy. I need to figure out how to turn it off.
Anyone else learning how to fly IFR?

Re: New MS Flight Sim (FSX)
I've considered getting my instrument rating. But between a full-time job, a part-time class load, and a family with lots of extra curricular activity I don't know where I'd find the time.
I finished my ASEL PPL in December of 2005. The funny thing is I flew a whole lot more getting ready for my check ride than I have since getting my license. I think I've logged all of about 8 hours since last December.
I can help with the mechanics of NDB, VOR, and ILS systems. I just haven't put them into perspective of actual use in flying an IFR approach. Maybe that's a good opportunity to do the shared cockpit stuff. I haven't tried any of the multiplayer stuff yet.Pavehawk

I got a Knighted in FSX.

P.S., Tokyo Executive Transport mission is really, really cool. I'm whistling the James Bond theme now.

Re: New MS Flight Sim (FSX)
I may be picking a copy up soon, after I get my new system.
Would be nice to finish up my multi-IFR.
Commercial check ride is less than 20 flight hours away!

Re: New MS Flight Sim (FSX)
Well if you ever pick this game up drop me a line. I like to fly once in a while online if I can.
Also, as a friend of mine found out the hard way. This game is very demanding. If you have a lower end graphics card. Do not expect the best performance. Since FSX takes ALOT of RAM both on your MOBO and on your card to get any above good to great setting.
Heck NVIDIA released a tweak guide for this game. For the various card series that they produced. Though I am running a 8800GTX. I can't run everything that can be displayed on high. Some things like terrain, ship and road traffic have to be doped down. Sometimes running in the area of 10-15 percent of what is possible in the case of traffic. While terrain is somewhere around 80 percent of what can be displayed.

No way!! with a 8800gtx it's more than enough... It's other component of your system slowing you down.

Re: New MS Flight Sim (FSX)
Are you running light bloom as well?
I wish that I had purchased a watercooled version. The BFG version looks very nice and only takes one slot. I may just sell the one I got and go that route. As my card runs ridiculously hot sometimes 90+*C! Should be RMA in the next week or so. Just couldn't go through the holidays without this puppy.
As far as settings go. I used Nvidias recommended settings on my computer.

I do have to say that my biggest bottleneck. Would have to be the AMD 4400+ that I run. Would like to get a CD2 but maybe for my B-Day.

Re: New MS Flight Sim (FSX)
yea my last card (7800 gtx) got so hot sometimes my computer would freeze or reboot itself. Upwards of 100C...im surprised the damn silicone didnt melt. My next upgrade is a processor since i only have the 4800+ but i OCed it pretty good (2.9ish) considering i have a crappy mobo. And yes i have bloom.
i forget my settings but i know i have a few maxed that you dont like scenery and traffic. Best part about the watercooled BFG is no matter what i play it nevers gets above 65 C. Gotta love that. Plus it just looks so damn sexy plus its one slot. Very very worth it.

Re: New MS Flight Sim (FSX)
Does anyone want to screw around doing some formation flying and general asshattery soon? Getting 4 747's with 0 vis and the same ILS approach within shouting distance is always fun.
